On Sunday, a group of current and former Witney Hockey Club players made the trip to Norwich for the Jarvy Cup tournament.
Nearly all members of the team have been influenced by Jarvy during their hockey careers, whether through his umpiring, coaching, playing mixed hockey, or simply as a part of the Witney Hockey Club community. We are incredibly proud as a club, that they travelled all the way to Norwich to honour Jarvy’s memory while helping to raise money for and Macmillan Cancer Support . It was also a gesture that we know meant a great deal to Karen and Hannah, Jarvy’s wife and daughter.
One of our current members, Karen Easterbrook, who was part of the team, shared the following match report:
The Witney Goldtimers hit Norfolk this weekend for the Jarvy Memorial Cup, eight legends, one pub, and a breakfast that could have fed the entire Norfolk league.
Karen and Hannah welcomed us with open arms and the bold claim that we’d been placed in the quality pool. We nodded politely and hoped they wouldn’t notice the collective creaking of joints.
We opened with a glorious 3–0 win against a team young enough to still be on TikTok. Then we remembered we had seven more games and immediately regretted peaking before 10am.
The next match was an 11–2 educational experience delivered by the eventual champions. After that, we continued the day with a mixed bag of results but no more massive defeats.
The players were, as always, iconic:
Sara, sleep‑deprived but heroic in goal.
Jen, whose legs are clearly made of different materials to ours.
Rab, powered by milk and class.
Sal J, back after 15 years, but this time card‑free (a miracle).
Kimbo, networking her way into the England coaching setup.
Sal H, Star player turned star umpire, surviving our sideline “encouragement”.
Kel, calm until she wasn’t
Karen, ran for the team but has nothing else to give
A brilliant weekend, full of laughs, effort, questionable mobility and memories. Norfolk won’t forget us.
Jarvy would’ve loved it.
