Fancy a bit of new podcast content for the weekend?

Let’s meet Charlie Rusbridge, 18 years of age, +4 handicap, multiple winner in elite junior amateur events.

Charlie has made the step up to elite men’s amateur golf and is on a journey of progress and learning.

It’s not always an upward curve, as Charlie has found out and tells us with commendable honesty.

His honesty and reflections are insightful but he has a great team around him.

From his Mum and Dad, his wider family, members at Colne Valley and Frinton, TaylorMade and many more, Charlie wouldn’t be on the journey he is without all the support.

Listen, enjoy and we’d love your feedback.

Eleven young Essex Golfers begin their adventures in Sir Henry Cooper Junior Championship today at the wonderful Kings Hill Golf Club in Kent.

156 elite juniors are hoping to play their best golf and end the week as the 2026 champion but of course, our bias leans towards our talented crop who are more than equipped to feature high up.

At Essex Golf, a frequent saying we find ourselves using is “every day’s a school day”, so for our youngsters playing today, Sir Henry Cooper was a much loved heavyweight boxer who fought Mohammed Ali twice, the first of which delivered a little controversy around a split glove when Ali was hurt in the 4th round.

As you travel to the course today, look him up. 📖

Play well everyone, enjoy the test, make the luck shine down on you and go deliver your own knockout punch. 🥊 🏌️‍♂️🏌️‍♀️⛳️

36 hole cut made, 72 holes completed in the English Women’s Strokeplay Championship.

Absolutely awesome stuff Maybel. Bravo. 👏

38th position in an elite, international field is incredible so well done you.

Remember those 11 birdies and 2 eagles over your 4 rounds and you have a target to beat next year.

A great day was had at Burnham on Crouch in the Herbert Bishop Vase yesterday.

A well presented course, great company and wonderful food provided all the ingredients for a day of competitive and memorable fun.

Despite a testing breeze, the scoring was excellent with Neil Beedell and Chris Edmeades of Chelmsford Golf Club coming out top with 43 points.

Our runners up, on countback from two other pairs, were Ian Kirkman and Liam Boyd of Potters Resorts Five Lakes with 42 points.

As always, a huge thanks goes out to the team at Burnham on Crouch for being such fantastic hosts. ❤️

Golf is brutal sometimes.

Harley, Charlie and Lewis finished their second rounds yesterday and had to load their clubs in the car knowing that their British Amateur Championship dream was over for 2026.

Having battled hard, all 3 would’ve got back to the scorers area to find that scoring across the field had been unbelievable all day.

Charlie will probably feel the most hard done by given he rallied from his finish in round one to sign for a second round score of two under par 70 and finish at level par for his 36 holes.

In the Essex Golf office, we all believed level par would sneak in at the start of the day but low scoring meant the cut line for qualification to the matchplay stages fell at -2.

Unlucky chaps.

Henry Styles, our round one overnight leader, had to roll his sleeves up and grind out a score, eventually signing for a 74 to finish at -3 and qualify for the knockout phase. 👏

Henry, Royal Liverpool and matchplay are three things that seem to align perfectly given Henry’s English Amateur victory last year so we wish him well and hope for some more magic for the rest of the week.

Good luck Henry, go out there and play hard, the whole of Essex is routing for you. 💪🏌️‍♂️⛳️

There are times when you just stop and have to say WOW.

Maybel Brooks, 13 years of age, yes, 13… played a big part in helping Essex to the East Region County Match Days title at the weekend against opponents with significantly more golfing experience than her.

In fact most have probably been playing golf for longer than she has been on this planet.

After a busy, yet highly successful weekend she travelled up to Ganton, Yorkshire for the English Women’s Strokeplay Championship.

Now to give some perspective, Ganton has hosted a Ryder Cup, Walker Cup and Curtis Cup. It’s a great and highly testing golf course.

Up against the best female amateur golfers across the UK, Europe and far fetched places in the world, it would be easy for Maybel to suffer a little stage fright and not perform the way she can.

But Maybel doesn’t do stage fright! She is after all, the 2026 Essex Women’s Champion.

She stood on the first tee and began her round Par, Par, Birdie, Par, Birdie, Birdie, Eagle….

Yes, five under par for her first 7 holes…

Let me remind you, Ganton is a tough track!

Whilst she couldn’t quite maintain the unbelievable run of scoring Maybel held herself together and returned a 1 under par round of 73 to sit two shots off second place out of a field of 142 elite amateurs.

In tied 10th place overall, she has set herself up for round 2 tomorrow with a great chance of making the cut on the international stage.

Very, very well played Maybel 👏👏👏

Other Essex golfers that perhaps didn’t quite have their best stuff today but go into tomorrow knowing that it’s a new day include, Zoe McLean-Tatton, Ria Prabhakar, Elizabeth Taylor and Megan Dawson.

Good luck tomorrow to all and Maybel, go make some more magic happen.

Our senior teams around the county have been patiently awaiting the quarter final draws for their respective competitions.

The Seniors Team, Seniors Plate and John Day competitions are now at the quarterfinal stage and it’s all getting exciting.

Good luck to all in your preparation for the next round, those still standing are just 3 wins from lifting the trophy. 🏆

The British Amateur Championship, where to begin with round one..

Let’s go big.

Henry Styles, take a bow. An opening five under par 67, which included 7 birdies, sits top of the leaderboard (out of 288), an absolutely incredible effort. 👏

Harley Smith had it going early with 3 birdies in the first 5 holes, unfortunately four bogeys in his last 13 hurt the great start but with level par sitting on the qualification line for the matchplay stages, Harley is just one off the mark with 18 holes to go.

Likewise, Charlie Rusbridge also got off to a flyer, opening with 10 pars and 2 birdies but unfortunately a costly double bogey and a couple more bogeys meant he finished at +2.

The important thing is there’s still much to play for for all 3 Essex boys, being one or two off the mark at halfway is still very much in play so go smash it today Harley and Charlie.

Henry, keep doing what you’re doing Sir.

Good luck today lads, it’s all to play for.

If you have a few minutes, grab yourself a cuppa and enjoy our County Champions final round of 71, this is absolutely worth a watch.

After the first 3 rounds, Oli held a 6 shot lead in his quest to win the 2026 Essex Amateur Championship.

Not phased, Oli went on to produce a controlled, one under par final round of 71, that in truth, really could’ve been 3 or 4 better on a different day.

Enjoy his masterclass in ball striking and control, which was a privilege to witness.

Oli is a very deserving county champion and it will be exciting to see how his golf journey develops in the years ahead.
