Saturday's training.

Exercises to help having your horse in front of the leg.

Following on from our last training article people were asking for exercises to help achieve this.

1. Riding plenty of transitions. Can be either progressive or direct. To help with the engagement and throughness.

Example could be something like trot for 6 steps and walk for 6 steps, then 4 and 4 and 2 and 2.

Could be the same with trot and canter.

2. Riding transitions within the pace so collected, working and medium steps. To help with the engagement and throughness.

You could use the letters around your school to ride your varied steps.

3. Lateral exercises like turn on the forehand, shoulder in, leg yield and quarters in. To help with the engagement.

4. Keeping to some of the scales of training. Rhythm, suppleness, contact, impulsion and straightness.

5. Leg on, apply your leg aid, get a response and take leg off so no nagging. If your horse can feel a fly land on them they can feel your legs. So an on and off leg aid.

Don't keep driving your horse forward.

6. Keeping your balance and riding forward to your hands. Keep your hands carried in front of you.

7. Keeping your horse in balance during your exercises.

I hope this has been helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Many thanks.

Saturday's training.

We love talking about all the seat work.

Yesterday we got one of our rider's to ride shoulder in by keeping the weight into the inside stirrup and inside seat bone.

Staying tall and turning their body at a 30 degree angle, this then positioned their hands.

Outside leg placed behind the girth. Inside leg at the girth.

Their horse followed the positional changes with the steps staying more through and fluent as clear aids and instructions were given.

Happy training.

Saturday's training thought.

If you can ride in walk, trot and canter without stirrups and loose reins or no reins (if on the lunge)then you have your own independent balance.

Then you are ready to ask for a contact, outline and roundness.

Saturday's training thought.

Riding ba****ck teaches you the feel of your horse's movement and not to grip.

Improves your balance and confidence.

Saturday's training thought.

Riding with loose reins will improve your balance and confidence.

Encourages you to steer with your legs and body.

Saturday's training.

When we arrive for coaching we always ask our clients what have they been working on and how has everything gone.

By listening we can start to make a plan in our mind with how to approach the session, what exercises to start with and to develop.

We also will ask how their work is going etc, to see how life in general is going. This can also affect people's riding performance.

The secret is the art of listening.

My role as a coach is to listen to the rider, listen to the horse, to watch what is happening then bring them both together in harmony.

Friday's training.

Rider confidence, aims and goals.

We all from time to time fall in and out of confidence. Everyone is an individual and learns at different levels and timescales. We have to help everyone to reach their goals in slightly different ways and to improve their confidence.

Possible causes of lack of confidence:

Riding a new horse.
Changing yards.
Riding in front of people.
Your first show.
First show at a new venue.
Moving up a level.
Your horse putting in a buck, spook, dropping a shoulder, bolting or rearing.
Your first Area Festival or Regional.
Your first National or International competition.
Weather.
Wrong help or horse.
Hacking.

And the list goes on.

Then make a plan of action to reach your goals or confidence:

Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses. We all have them.

Write down short term and long term aims and goals.

How to reach each target.

Be realistic with your ambitions.

Be around positive people.

What has caused you to lack confidence.

How to control your way of thinking and breathing.

How to start to believe in yourself.

What can you control and can't control to help you to achieve.

Remember you have got to feel ready and able to work on your confidence or aims. You have to want to try and have a go.

There is a difference in someone telling you to do something or you should be doing this by now which can make you feel bad or that you have failed before you have started. To someone saying I think you are ready to try this or I think you can do this now which will improve your confidence and want to have a go. The right people around you is so important.

People need to admit when they are worried or concerned about something first of all. Then you are ready and able to work through your challenges.

This is just a few notes and pointers which I can develop more if people wish.

Hope you have found this helpful and please let me know if you have any questions.

Many thanks.

Friday's training.

With another horse yesterday which was never allowed to stretch in his previous ownership so finds letting go over the back difficult

We used lots of curved lines in walk and trot to encourage him to draw forward to the contact and releasing through the back.

Half circles, serpentines, shallow loops, figures of eights etc to encourage him to bend through his body and around his rider's inside leg.

This helped him to relax, to soften and to release him through his ribcage.

We used the lateral stretch before the longitudinal stretch to soften his steps and body.

We wetr then able to work him long and low when we straightened him.

Normally we use longitudinal suppleness then lateral but in this case it was the other way round.

We hope this has been interesting and helpful.

If you have any questions please let us know.

Happy training.

Friday's training.

With one of the horse's we were schooling yesterday we used leg yield as part of our walk warm up.

Our focus first of all was having activity and push from the hind legs, swing through the back with release and stretching forward to our contact.

This is always the first requirement we are looking for, forward and straight with all the horse's.

A lot of our walking was on a slight inside track to help with this.

We also used a range of various size circles.

To improve the reaction and response to my leg we then introduced some leg yield. 2 or 3 steps then straight followed by another 2 or 3 steps and so on, into the same direction.

Then we asked for a few steps to the left, then straight followed by a few steps to the right.

These are great exercises for rider coordination and horse reaction.

Good communication and understanding skills between horse and rider.

This then produced a beautiful trot.

We enjoy sharing with you our daily exercises we use in our coaching.

We hope these are helpful and useful.

Happy riding.

Friday's training thought.

It's so important our horse's start their training session in a relaxed manner and also finishes the session in the same relaxed way.

Either side of the warm up and cool down is the main part of the session.
