Fenland Running Club

Fenland Running Club FRC is a relatively small club with just over 100 members. We meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:30pm at Wisbech Rugby Club Chapel Rd Wisbech PE13 1RG

We were formed in April 1992 following the amalgamation of Elmfield Joggers and the Wisbech Athletic Club. The Club is affiliated to England Athletics and as Fenland Running Club we continue to pride ourselves on our friendly and welcoming atmosphere, encouraging the “hare” and the “tortoise” alike. We meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:30pm at Wisbech Rugby Club, Chapel Rd, Wisbech, Cam

bridgeshire, PE13 1RG. Whilst our training sessions are always meticulously designed to support the improvements of runners and there is always a keen focus on the social aspect to running with Fenland. It is the stated aim of the Club to help and encourage each and everyone, regardless of ability. Everyone is welcome. Our session leaders work hard to ensure that the training sessions are all inclusive so that all members get the most out of them. Whether that be a focused schedule to beat a PB or simply to run with friends and likeminded people Fenland caters for everyone. To allow for the differences in goals and abilities, most of the training sessions have four groups for you to choose to run in. The faster groups tend to run a little bit further and a bit faster but all groups do the same session and continually meet up throughout it. This allows for us to all run together and engage in the social aspect of the club whilst meeting everyone’s training needs. Although originally formed as an Athletics Club our concentration is now on year-round running, at distances up to the marathon, with cross-country running in season. We enter teams each year in the very popular Round Norfolk, Hereward and Peterborough Green Wheel Relays and participate in the Frostbite Friendly League (a six race series), competing against other local clubs. We also organize outings to the London and other big-city Marathons. With about a hundred members, Fenland Running Club enjoys a good representation at most local races, often enjoying success in one or more of the categories. Being a supportive and friendly club, any member’s success is celebrated with pride by the whole team. There are various social events from time-to-time throughout the year. Come along to one of our sessions to see what we do and to get a feel of the club. Runners of all abilities are welcome, whether new to running, training for competitions and races, or if you just want to run for fun and keep fit, we welcome you along and look forward to running with you.

Race Roundup, June 2026

The Peterborough Grand Prix summer series of 5K races have begun and Fenland RC started with a strong showing. Covering the same distance as a park run, the GP races attract strong runners from far and wide and so there is stiff competition.

Ben Jimson came home first for the club in 16:52, making the most of the favourable conditions with a personal best time over 5k. The course was an out-and-back route near Eye, with a hairpin turn at half way. Ben was in a sprint finish to the line with a local rival from Yaxley, and just managed to win by a second.

Strong performances also came from Sean Banks in 18:05 and Dan Tickner in 18:48, while the last club man under 20 minute barrier was Pete Lunt in 19:54. The 5K series is made up of 5 races, with the three best for any given runner counting towards their final position. The next race is at Nene Park on 24th June.

A team of 8 FRC runners also travelled to Wymondham for the Lotus 5K – based around the famous sports car team’s test track. The start was split into two waves with the fastest runners setting off first. In the first wave, Martin Jennings stormed to an age category win as first Male Veteran 55, in 18:12.

Close behind was Malcolm Tuff in 18:59. He achieved a higher age grading than Martin – some 84% - yet was second in his age category. Simon Hamilton also performed well on the night, with a fourth place age category in 20:37. First for the club’s ladies was Katie Woodcock in 20:47 which placed her tenth female overall.

Malcolm Tuff also took part in the Alex Moore Relay and finished his 5K stage in 18:41 (86%). Sarah Rippon competed in the run / swim aquathlon in Beccles, completing the event in 1:05:34.

Five runners took part in the Run Sandringham Event 10K,. Dan Dale in 41:44, Robert Fines completed the course in 50:47, Rachael Nicholls in 1:00:57 and husband and wife team Ian and Sally King finishing in 1:02:57 and 1:30:35 respectively.
Also at the Sandringham running festival, Emelia Heeley and Ollie Martin were half of a mixed charity team in the 24 hour event with friends Robert Bond and Ross Nicholas. Their team came 1st out of 21 teams in the 3-5 mixed team category, running 32 laps and covering 160 miles between them in 24:45:43. Emelia ran 7 laps, Ollie 8, Robert 9 and Ross 8

On Sunday 7th June, FRC took part in the Greenwood Wheel Relay. The club fielded 5 teams of 7 runners, 35 runners in total. The teams also required cyclists on each stage, some of whom were also running, but many other members, family and friends were required, also providing transport to and from each stage and the club provided timing at one of the changeovers.
For the club, the highlight of the event was Trevor Sutherill running the final stage for his team, alongside his guide Jane Greenwood. Having undergone major heart surgery and suffering a stroke which affected his sight, it was truly inspirational to watch as he led the other club members round the track for the final 400m

From 5K to 80K

Fenland RC’s members have taken on the widest range of races over the wildest range of terrain. From 5K to Ultra Marathon, the Club has seen outstanding performances across the board.

A team of ten runners went to Eye, near Peterborough, to compete in its annual 10K race. On a very windy day, with 2 miles of headwind, first across the line was Malcolm Tuff, who sprinted past team mate Dan Tickner in the very last few metres. Both men were well under 40 minutes, with Malcolm finishing in 39:04 and Dan in 39:06.

Malcolm won his class (MV60) and repeated the feat only days later at the West Norfolk AC “Fighter 5K”. Taking on a smooth concrete course around the former airfield at Great Massingham, he completed in 18:39 and nailed an age grading of 86%.

The Eye 10K has road and trail sections which make for slower times, but Dan got a course pb and seasoned veterans Jac Richards and Maire Kay cruised round well under the hour. Nigel Marlow’s gritty 48:05 Was a course PB and was matched by the determination of Colin Travi in 54:38.

Dan went on to run the Deepings 10K in 38:54 (25th) which was a course best for him, with veteran Pete Lunt close behind in 41:19. Fresh from his London Marathon, Aidan Cooper got a personal best in 46:21 while Zoe Thornton continued to show her commitment with a clocking of 1:08:25.

By contrast, Ben Jimson ran a full marathon through the old town of Riga (Latvia). At last, he achieved the London qualifying standard he was after, with a personal best of 2:52:00. Keeping a steady 4 minutes per kilometre pace for almost all of the race, Ben’s time earnt him a place on the start grid for London 2027.
Fellow Club member Charlie Buttriss also ran the route in Riga in 3:40, while Katie Woodcock ran the Copenhagen Marathon. She split the men’s times with 3:31:12. Conditions were perfect – overcast and 12°C – and the flat course through beside the capital’s canals suited her well.

Lesley Prince ran the Zig-Zag Happy Birthday half marathon in 2:25:41 near Dereham on a 5K lapped course.

In North Wales, Sean Banks ran the Snowdonia 80km Ultra Marathon event against international opposition. No stranger to the challenge of ultra distances, Sean finished in 99th with a time of 11:31:43. This was no mean feat as the rugged trail through the Welsh mountains involved more than 2500m of climbing. This meant the 78km course was just over 80km.

In the same series of Ultra Trail Series (UTS), Stuart Follen and Alan Bird took on the 55km race. They succeeded in reaching the first checkpoint in time, but with the weather closing in and a drop out rate in excess of 20%, they just missed the second and so could not quite complete the course.
