Building strength and muscle takes time. And by time, I mean years. I’ll die on the hill of lifting weights being a lifelong habit. The movements I do now will be the movements I do in 20,30,40 years time, all being well.

And the bloody ace thing about it? You can always get off on achieving new, cool stuff.

This morning is the first time I’ve attempted weighted chin ups. And I managed a couple. Buzzing. Pulling my own bodyweight up is one of the movements I’ve found hardest to re-gain after having two kids via caesarean and then a vaginal birth.

You can be an experienced gym bod and still revel in the joy of nailing a new movement - forever!

The best ‘hack’ for what to do when you’ve deviated from your usual day to day habits with food and movement…😜

If you’re only ever interested in the elusive ‘destination’ and not the journey itself, reaching goals that you really want to achieve will always feel like a strain.

If you’re in a constant state of not feeling worthy, on some level, as you are, then you’re always striving to feel good enough, existing in a place that always feels a bit s**t because you always feel ‘less than’.

You know the score - I’ll be happier when…I’ll feel better about myself if…my life will be easier when…
Insert relevant words for yourself.

If you’re done with being in the energy of always slightly disliking yourself into becoming thinner (erm, no girl), ‘healthier’, fitter or more perfectly dialled in across the board (crippling perfectionism), then I can join your team and help you to actually LOVE the journey.

Gaaad this week has been hard.

As you know I’m all about the honesty, and this whole looking after yourself thing isn’t linear for any of us.

I’ve been parenting solo as Mr H has been at work for three nights looking after the gaff there. So I’ve been looking after the gaff here, plus working, mothering and trying to generally keep the wheels of life turning.

I haven’t fuelled myself as well as I normally do. I haven’t trained this week - it’ll be a Saturday and Sunday sesh situation - and my nervous system is jacked to f**k.

The excellent thing though, is that I still have absolute baseline non negotiables that are so woven into my routine that they always happen - water on waking and throughout the day, going to sleep early enough for me, still eating!! - never ‘forgetting’ to eat or skipping meals. And my steps are always at 10-15k a day by default.

And I no longer subscribe to perfectionism sabotage - ‘I haven’t eaten perfectly today so I might as well just eat the entire contents of every cupboard this evening’. Or ‘I’ve not managed to train during the week, so I’ll sack it off this week and just start again on Monday’.

There’s a massive difference between crippling perfectionism and having high standards for yourself most of the time.

Cue dusting myself off, accepting the week for what it was, and weaving more of my ‘normal’ back in in the coming days.

It’s taken me a long time to get to where I am with how I feel about my body.

Being a teen in the 90s was NOT the one for cultivating a healthy, grounded body image.
I remember dropping down to do literally hundreds of sit ups whenever I had a few minutes. That is not normal behaviour for a 16 year old girl.

Even today I was examining myself in the mirror and the inner critic piped up.
She’s generally pretty quiet these days as down the years I’ve told her that her opinions aren’t welcome.

But this morning she was there reminding me that my stomach looked anything but flat in these leggings. That I’m not the right shape. That I had no business wearing these clothes that make me look like, well, an adult woman.

I’m putting this here this morning as a little reminder to us all - I’m pretty sure this will resonate - that looking like a well fuelled, strong woman at any age or stage is the most normal thing in the world.

Big love
Amy

Muscle mums farmers carry their heavy shopping bags back home and then can’t resist a quick bag-for-life workout before re-entering the chaos.
IYKYK.

No hating on the form please. That isn’t the point of this vid 🤣
And those bags were effing heavy and very unstable!
And yes, I really did carry them back from the village 😏

CLIENT REFLECTIONS

I’m literally blown away every day by the absolute privilege I have of people trusting me to help them to rebuild trust and strength in their bodies, minds and spirits. Thanks for showing up and trusting in the process and yourself Eileen 💛

I am delighted with the improvement in my overall fitness and strength that has resulted from having Amy as my personal trainer for the last 4 months. It is wonderful to see not just the measurable physical effects of her advice and training but also benefits I never expected to experience such as improving my stamina in swimming (from 10 lengths to 60) and golf (reducing the number of strokes per hole) and fell walking further, higher, faster.
Amy has a vast knowledge of the human body, she knew exactly the right exercises that were perfect for me, building up my strength very quickly but far more importantly, safely. She has taught me the correct techniques, appropriately tailored for me.
She has an empathic ability to know what works for me and what is right for me. I think this is due to her interest in her profession and her experience, but also because she listens to me. Instinctively she knew what I wanted to achieve.
Amy has given me the confidence to exercise on gym equipment I never thought I’d be able to use. I love arriving at any gym and using the machines, following the routines she has developed for me.
I have looked forward to every session, enjoyed the progress but also she is a brilliant conversationalist, full of enthusiasm for life and knowledge and this made every minute a joy.
Thank you xx
