Sunday morning BJJ at WSMA 🥋
What actually is BJJ — and why is it so good for young people?
BJJ is a grappling martial art. Rather than relying on punches and kicks, students learn how to control another person using positioning, balance, leverage, throws, takedowns and groundwork.
And that makes it a fantastic way for children and teenagers to learn to solve problems while somebody else is actively trying to stop them.
They learn to think under pressure, adapt when something doesn’t work, stay calm when they’re in a difficult position and keep looking for a solution.
Physically, BJJ develops coordination, balance, strength, fitness and body awareness. But some of its biggest benefits aren’t physical at all.
It teaches resilience. Patience. Confidence. Self-control. The ability to cope with getting things wrong and simply try again.
At Wi******er School of Martial Arts®, I also put a lot of emphasis on how young people train.
Students work with different partners, ages, sizes and experience levels. More experienced students learn responsibility and leadership; newer students learn from those ahead of them. Training is structured and carefully supervised, with technique and controlled practice taking priority over simply trying to “win”.
There are no egos to prove and nobody is expected to be the best person in the room.
The aim is to become a little better than you were last week.
And judging by the smiles on Sunday morning, they seem to have quite a lot of fun doing it too. 😁🥋
