Saturday Family Martial Arts šŸ„‹

One of my favourite things about the Family Class is the range of ages on the mat.

Young children, older children, teenagers and adults can all train in the same class - sometimes with their own family member, sometimes with somebody completely different.

And that brings benefits you simply don’t get from separating everyone by age all the time.

The younger students learn from watching and working with more experienced students. Older students develop patience, responsibility and leadership. Adults get proper martial arts training rather than simply standing on the sidelines watching their children. And everyone learns how to adapt what they’re doing to different sizes, ages and abilities.

Saturday’s class covered striking, pad work, movement and controlled sparring, with everyone working at the level appropriate for them.

It’s proper martial arts training, but in an environment where people look after one another, have fun and can progress at their own pace.

That’s exactly what I want the Family Class at Wi******er School of Martial ArtsĀ® to be. šŸ„‹

šŸ„‹ THURSDAY 5PM - LITTLE NINJAS

Martial arts should be fun - but there should be a lot of learning going on underneath all that fun too!

My Thursday 5pm Little Ninjas work on a broad range of Ju Jitsu skills: striking, throws, takedowns, groundwork, movement, defence and learning how to put those skills together.

But some of the most important things they learn aren’t techniques.

They learn how to work safely with different partners. How to control their strength. How to keep going when something doesn’t work first time. How to be confident without needing to dominate somebody else. And how to look after the person they’re training with.

That’s one of the reasons I deliberately teach mixed-ability classes. More experienced students learn leadership, patience and responsibility, while newer students have people around them to learn from and aspire to.

There’s an awful lot of problem solving, communication, resilience, self-control and teamwork happening on those mats.

That’s Ju Jitsu at Wi******er School of Martial ArtsĀ®.

Family Martial Arts - Friday 6pm šŸ„‹

One of the things I love about the Family Class is just how mixed it is.

Parents training with children, teenagers working with adults, experienced students helping newer students, and everyone learning together.

Training across different ages, sizes and abilities brings huge benefits. Students learn to adapt what they’re doing rather than relying on strength, younger students gain confidence working safely with adults, and more experienced students develop patience, control and leadership.

And yes, sometimes the smallest person in the room gets to kick the biggest one! šŸ˜‚

Martial arts should be challenging, but it should also be fun. These photos rather sum up Friday’s class: plenty of concentration, plenty of energy and a lot of smiles.

At Wi******er School of Martial ArtsĀ®, Family Martial Arts means the whole family can train - not simply standing at the side watching someone else have all the fun.

Tuesday 5:15 Ju Jitsu - room for a few more friends!

There’s room in my Tuesday 5:15pm Ju Jitsu class for a few more children to come and join the fun.

So what actually is Ju Jitsu at Wi******er School of Martial ArtsĀ®?

It’s a really varied martial art. Children learn striking, throws, takedowns, groundwork, escapes, holds and practical self-defence - rather than concentrating on just one type of training.

But what they learn through Ju Jitsu matters just as much.

They learn to stay calm when something is difficult. To keep trying when a technique doesn’t work first time. To work safely with different partners. To control their strength. To listen, think, problem-solve and make decisions under pressure.

They also discover that confidence doesn’t have to mean being the loudest or toughest person in the room.

At WSMA, training is structured and progressive, but there’s plenty of fun too. Children work with one another rather than simply alongside one another, so friendships, teamwork and looking after training partners become part of learning martial arts.

And because Ju Jitsu covers so many different skills, there’s usually something for every child to discover that they’re particularly good at.

Tuesday 5:15pm currently has space for some new faces.

Beginners are very welcome. šŸ„‹šŸ’™šŸ§”

A full mat for my 12:45 Ninjas & Teens! šŸ„‹

Lots of energy, lots of laughter and some brilliant training - but one of my favourite things about this class is watching how well the students look after one another.

Having Ninjas and Teens training together brings some real benefits. Different ages, sizes, grades and experience levels mean students learn to adapt rather than expecting every partner to move or react in exactly the same way.

More experienced students learn patience, responsibility and leadership. Younger and newer students have people to learn from and aspire to. And everyone develops the confidence to work with different partners, communicate clearly and keep each other safe.

They work through striking, movement, partner drills and pad work - challenging one another while still making sure their partner could learn and enjoy the session.

That balance matters to me. Martial arts shouldn’t just develop physical skills. It should teach children how to be a good training partner: controlled, respectful, encouraging and aware of the person in front of them.

And judging by the smiles, they had rather a lot of fun doing it too! šŸ˜‚

12:45 Ninjas & Teens - a very full and very happy class. šŸ’™šŸ§”

Sunday Family Martial Arts

One of the things I love most about my Family Classes is seeing different generations training together.

Children can train alongside parents, older siblings and other adults, while adults get to learn something for themselves rather than simply watching from the sidelines.

And training with different ages, sizes and levels of experience has real benefits. Students learn to adapt how they work with different partners, develop control and awareness, communicate, cooperate and take responsibility for each other’s safety. More experienced students learn patience and leadership; younger and newer students get encouragement, confidence and people to look up to.

That’s one of the reasons I keep classes at Wi******er School of Martial ArtsĀ® mixed ability. Martial arts shouldn’t just develop techniques - it should develop the person using them.

There’s plenty of serious learning, but as Sunday’s class demonstrates, there’s usually plenty of laughter too! šŸ˜‚
