The Montane Lakeland 50 & 100

BLAST from the past... 2008, the first ever Montane Lakeland 100, took place from the legendary Coniston Sports & Social Centre. There were 11 finishers and the event was won by mountain running legend Steve Birkinshaw.

We used 'champion chip' timing chips round each runner's ankle and moved timing mats from checkpoint to checkpoint. By buttermere, the mats had all stopped working, so we had to then do the timing by hand as they came through the checkpoint.

We were at Threlkeld today with the Lakeland 100 kids challenge... we've got to get rid of the remaining buffs and medals somehow 🤷‍♂️

NOTE FOR 100 ENTRANTS

If you intend to enter the 100 mile event, please ensure that you add your qualifying events and the years they were completed. A Lakeland 100 finish from ANY year gives entry, all other qualifiers must be dated 2025 / 2026, please do not list results older than 2025.

ANY 100 mile event in 2025 / 2026 acts as a qualifer or any 50+ event on mountain terrain with 3000m+ climbing. You must also add your finish time.

Over 20 years ago, a running friend suggested that we organise a 100 mile running race in the Lake District, the first of it's kind. I'd spent many hours running with Dave over the Lakeland fells, so was used to his daft ideas. We sat at his kitchen table as he unfolded a map and outlined a route he thought would show the beauty of the Lake District without necessarily running the main peaks, the route remains today.

It was heart breaking to hear that Dave recently suffered a heart attack and passed away whilst walking at Kentmere. Many of you will remember Dave from the early years running recce days and the later years, he was always at HQ in Coniston or Dalemain checkpoint with the Bardon family.

Our thoughts go out to his family at this difficult time. A true legend lost far too early. Thanks for your daft ideas Dave, some of them will stand as a tribute for many years to come 🙏🙏🙏

We were fortunate again this year to have no callouts for mountain resuce teams, but we know that won't be the case (and hasn't been the case) every year. So we've made our annual £6000 donation, to be split as 12 x £500 donations to each of the 12 mountain rescue teams in the Lake District.

We appreciate that all primary schools don't receive enough funding, but small rural schools in particular, rely on donations to help. We think this is a great way to contribute in a small way, to those communities through which we pass 😊

❗️❗️ WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH ALL THE LEFT OVER MEDALS AND BUFFS❗️❗️

Well that's something we were thinking about a few months ago... So we came up with a worthwhile idea. We contacted all the primary schools on the route (of which there are 14) and lots of other primary schools in Cumbria to offer them our FREE Lakeland kids running challenge, lead by our Epic Kidz Charity sports coaches.

We're going into the schools to deliver the fun challenge, based around running and games. The kids get to learn about the route and Lakeland event. They will also get medals and buffs when they complete the challenge! We're now booked up for the whole of September and into October 😊
