The Movement Guy

I believe that every single person has an untapped potential and purpose in this world and are capable of than far more than they realise and I believe that it all starts with a healthy, nourished body

On a daily basis I am privileged enough to work with a wide variety of people of all ages and ability's and help realise just how strong and capable they really are using a variety of different training styles i.e. pure strength, interval conditioning, yoga, strongman style, H.I.I.T, body-building and basic bodyweight conditioning

I don't believe one style is better than the other and that in order to reach your full potential as a human being and athlete you need a hybridization of it all

Now as for diet, nutrition etc. again I believe in a simple almost 'primitive' approach of good nutritious food and an eating protocol similar to our ancestors and everyone who has tried it has experienced reduced or complete lack of cravings, reduced body fat, improved energy, food and mood and subsequent improvements in the rest of their lives.

Some aggressive, misguided rehab in the aftermath of Louise's accident left her shoulders in a pretty bad way, completely destroying her shoulder mechanics

So now we're rebuilding them one activation at a time

Every movement we do involves multiple tissues contracting and relaxing and multiple joints doing multiple things, even something as simple as turning your hand over is a complex series of patterns

You can't just load something or yank on it and expect it to resolve an issue, especially in complex cases, we have to be patient and rebuild those patterns piece by piece, slowly building that neurological map and teaching the nervous system that it's safe to let go

A big part of what I do is enhancing peoples awareness of their body - What's tight? What's getting in the way? What can we do to improve it?

I want to show people that they have far more control over their body than they realise and that improving how you move doesn't require anything special, just a bit of time, some focus and maybe a basketball 🏀😂

Upgrading hips at the Hub

If you're going to do mobility work, it should be relevant to movement and use gravity and body weight to help you learn how to organise your tissues while in motion, something sitting on the floor twisting your knees around doesn't do, no matter how bands you add

That's why the vast majority of my drills (where possible) are done standing and why I assess that way too, I think anything else is a waste of time and at best a soothing balm to address a gaping neurological hole

Your tissues aren't tight because you don't stretch or do mobility, they're tight because you don't know how to use them while in motion

It took me ages to figure these out, he got it in 5 seconds😂

A big motivation for leaving gym training behind and learning how to move again was that I wanted to keep up with, and do cool stuff with the kids, as well as teach them a few things

That's the plan with the Movement Cave, build a place to explore movement and learn/do cool stuff

I never really gave much thought to biomechanics, outside of squat, press, dead. I didn't really care and even at uni I wasn't that interested, despite it being one of my strongest subjects

Until my body fell apart and all those little things I'd been ignoring caught up with me and I couldn't even walk without pain

So that became my priority, not being in pain and being able to move without pain, which, seemed like a simple enough task, but it took years

Years of stretching, years of mobility, years of doing every drill in the gym you can think of, but despite ticking all the gym boxes, I still had pain, I still felt awkward in my movements and my Nervous System felt more dysregulated than ever

That's when I stripped it all back and used the stuff I'd learned working with my neuro clients to develop drills that restored my ability to move, focusing heavily on the gait cycle, shifting my weight, aligning my CoM (head over foot) and syncing my limbs in movement

I haven't been in the gym or trained since

Absolutely buzzing that this lady found me, her attitude and energy are amazing

Here we're learning to sit up in the correct sequence, so rather than leaning forward we're focusing on pulling the head up to pull the spine, gently, into place, restoring that natural curve (ATP) - an essential piece of the locomotion puzzle

These little adjustments are very difficult at first and the nervous system will fight you (the legs going everywhere etc) but as we connect these dots, it will calm and it will open the door to more opportunities

If it isn't obvious I absolutely love this 💩

Someone asked me the other day what I meant by 'mapping' so I'm going to try to explain it

When I look at someone's movement I'm not just looking at what the muscles are doing, I'm looking at how their NS feels about it, where they're struggling to load, to stabilise, to integrate and connect, I'm looking for the gaps in their neurological map

Tension in the tissues disappears once we take someones head out of the equation so what we're seeing when someone moves is what their nervous system feels safe to do and has experience doing

If we want to change it in a meaningful way we have to upgrade that map and reconnect the dots, like in this example of reconnecting with the glutes so they can be reintegrated into movement

Stretching a muscle won't stop it being tense
- unless you do it too much then it becomes a weak, overstretched rubber band and something else locks down in its place - just as strengthening your glutes won't stop back/hip pain, we need to reintegrate them into movement

Once we do that, once we expand that neurological map, everything you do trains them

Getting comfortable in uncomfortable positions

When I decided to part ways with the fitness industry/gym last year I was still dealing with a lot of neurological issues brought on by a back neck injury and all the back injuries I'd had

Squatting down would send my head dizzy, I'd see stars and I'd feel really weird when I stood up, like the world had flipped upside down, bending over was the same - at this point I hadn't figured out how messed up my visual and vestibular systems were and my NS was constantly jacked up

But, I knew the answers were down there so I did what any sane person would do, put on my elevation mask and started exploring those panic inducing positions, piece by piece

I'll explain the mask in another post but while it didn't completely fix the issues (this was the vestibular bit) it improved everything 10 fold and my hip mobility improved massively along with my movement

Learning to move while navigating gravity and a bit of load will more for you mobility that any stretch or mobility routine which is why I don't do or prescribe any nowadays, movement is the remedy

Movement, like crawling, walking requires contralateral coordination (opposite arm and leg moving together) but, when someone becomes bedbound, this cross-talk often stops, and the brain defaults to symmetrical, rigid and defensive patterns

That why we're using the props (ball/roller) to help Dan to map and develop these patterns while forcing both hemispheres to communicate (cross body motion) - stimulating the development of new neural pathways

We're learning to integrate, activating lymphatic drainage and teaching the nervous system that it's safe to drop some of the protective tone, allowing us to lay the foundations for more complex movements
