Match Report: 🐝 HFH U12 Greens vs. 🦈 Shevington Tiger Sharks (NWC Development Cup – 2nd Round)
The U12 Greens made the trip to Shevington for their second-round clash in the NWC Development Cup, facing off against a tough and unfamiliar Tiger Sharks team.
The Hornets were slow to start, caught off-guard in the opening moments as Shevington capitalised on an early opportunity to score a converted try right from the first set. A series of unforced errors compounded their problems, and within the first six minutes, the Hornets found themselves trailing 10-0.
However, the young Greens showed remarkable composure, refusing to panic as they regrouped and began looking for a way back into the game.
Their persistence paid off in the 10th minute when Roan broke through the Sharks’ defense, sprinting away to score under the posts. Harry converted, narrowing the deficit to 10-6.
Just five minutes later, the Hornets struck again. Oscar and Ronnie were both denied close to the line, but Lucas crashed over on the left, drawing the teams level at 10-10.
The Sharks then piled on the pressure, forcing a drop-out as they camped on the Hornets’ line. But the Greens’ defence held firm, with standout efforts from James and Brody to keep the score locked at 10-10 heading into halftime.
The Hornets came out firing in the second half, improving their intensity. Strong runs from Jack and George allowed the Greens to shift the ball quickly, sending Roan down the right wing for his second try of the game. Jack’s conversion put the Hornets ahead for the first time, 10-16.
What followed was a scrappy, stop-start period, with both teams giving away penalties and struggling to maintain rhythm. The Sharks capitalised on a shift in momentum, scoring wide out to make it 14-16.
But the Greens responded with intent. From the restart, Harry’s powerful carries, supported by Jamie, helped push the Hornets into Sharks territory. Roan, ever the danger, dotted down in the corner for his hat-trick try, extending the lead to 14-20.
As the game wore on, Luke’s tireless work was rewarded when his quick play-the-ball allowed the Hornets to shift the ball left. Jacob finding Dan, who created space down the left edge 30 meters out to sprint over the line, adding another try for the Greens and stretching their advantage to 14-24.
Shevington, under relentless defensive pressure, couldn’t get out of their own half. A turnover deep in Sharks territory saw Ronnie bulldoze through multiple defenders to score, making it 14-28 with just minutes left.
With the game becoming more fractious in the dying minutes, Roan capped a great performance with a fourth try out wide, sealing the victory for the Hornets at 14-32.
A good lesson in discipline and resilience for the young Greens, who, despite facing a fiery and competitive Shevington, ground out a result with only 13 players to be in the quarter final draw.
