Everyone at Widnes Cricket Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Bob Blair, a former player, coach, and one of New Zealand cricket’s most respected figures.
His passing will be marked by the New Zealand Black Caps, who will wear black armbands in this week’s Test against England.
Bob’s contribution to cricket extended far beyond his time at Widnes. A New Zealand Test cricketer between 1953 and 1964, he played 19 Test matches, taking 43 wickets. In first-class cricket, he established himself as one of New Zealand’s finest fast bowlers, claiming an outstanding 537 wickets at an average of 18.54, including 41 five-wicket hauls and 12 ten-wicket match hauls.
Bob will forever be remembered in cricketing history for one of the game’s most courageous moments. During the Johannesburg Test against South Africa in December 1953, he learned that his fiancée, Nerissa Love, had tragically lost her life in the Tangiwai rail disaster in New Zealand—one of the country’s worst peacetime tragedies. Believed by teammates and spectators to be unable to continue, Bob later emerged from the pavilion to join an injured Bert Sutcliffe at the crease, receiving a standing ovation from a stunned crowd. Their final-wicket partnership became an enduring symbol of courage, resilience, and dignity in the face of unimaginable personal loss.
Those fortunate enough to play alongside Bob, learn from him, or spend time in his company will remember not only his cricketing accomplishments but also his humility, warmth, and generosity. He inspired generations of cricketers and left a lasting impression on everyone connected with Widnes Cricket Club, leaving behind a wealth of cricketing wit and wisdom.
Bob’s place in cricket history is secure, but here at Widnes CC, he will be remembered just as fondly as a teammate, coach, mentor, and friend.
Our thoughts are with Bob’s wife Barbara, their family and all within the cricketing community who had the privilege of Bob’s company.
Rest in peace, Bob.
Forever a part of the Widnes CC family, and a legend on and off the field!
