Everyone at Widnes Cricket Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Bob Blair, a former player, coach, and one of New Zealand cricket’s most respected figures.

His passing will be marked by the New Zealand Black Caps, who will wear black armbands in this week’s Test against England.

Bob’s contribution to cricket extended far beyond his time at Widnes. A New Zealand Test cricketer between 1953 and 1964, he played 19 Test matches, taking 43 wickets. In first-class cricket, he established himself as one of New Zealand’s finest fast bowlers, claiming an outstanding 537 wickets at an average of 18.54, including 41 five-wicket hauls and 12 ten-wicket match hauls.

Bob will forever be remembered in cricketing history for one of the game’s most courageous moments. During the Johannesburg Test against South Africa in December 1953, he learned that his fiancée, Nerissa Love, had tragically lost her life in the Tangiwai rail disaster in New Zealand—one of the country’s worst peacetime tragedies. Believed by teammates and spectators to be unable to continue, Bob later emerged from the pavilion to join an injured Bert Sutcliffe at the crease, receiving a standing ovation from a stunned crowd. Their final-wicket partnership became an enduring symbol of courage, resilience, and dignity in the face of unimaginable personal loss.

Those fortunate enough to play alongside Bob, learn from him, or spend time in his company will remember not only his cricketing accomplishments but also his humility, warmth, and generosity. He inspired generations of cricketers and left a lasting impression on everyone connected with Widnes Cricket Club, leaving behind a wealth of cricketing wit and wisdom.

Bob’s place in cricket history is secure, but here at Widnes CC, he will be remembered just as fondly as a teammate, coach, mentor, and friend.

Our thoughts are with Bob’s wife Barbara, their family and all within the cricketing community who had the privilege of Bob’s company.

Rest in peace, Bob.

Forever a part of the Widnes CC family, and a legend on and off the field!

Stand in Captain Alex Curlett took the 2nd XI on the short trip over the bridge (thanks to Merseyflow we dont pay) and came away with the spoils.

Batting first and having carrying on his weekend fine form, Jay Mahaldar openened the innings and was in destructive form. He smashed his maiden century off just 56 balls which would have delighted his sponsor Hippy Dippy Vintagen. Contributions from Curlett and McCurdy meant Widnes scored a l***y 198 in their 20 overs.

Runcorn lost early and regular wickets and couldnt get going and were dismissed well short of the target. Spinners picking up the wickets with Atta (3), Zach (2) and MCurdy (2) getting the job done.

Also worth a mention yesterday the womens softball team. They beat the same opposition on the other side of the bridge.

Widnes progressed through to the next round of the Liverpool Echo T20 competition largely thanks to skipper Alex Hewitt and some tight bowling.

Batting first Neston set about the quicks but tight bowling from Bennett and a rare bowling outing for Lou Burns put the brakes on. Alex picked up two wickets and then as per normal in this format opened up the innings. His 74 not out was the mainstay of the innings with contributions from consistent Luke McCoy and Bennett.

Tonight the 2nd XI travel to Runcorn looking to keep a club wide winning run going ove the last week.
