Eight years ago, I first met Caroline when we rolled out our mats side by side at The Yoga Bank. We quickly discovered we shared a love of yoga, and as it turned out, we were allotment neighbours too. I remember when Caroline had her first hip replacement and how uncertain she felt about whether she would ever return to yoga. Like many people, she worried about pain, mobility, injury and whether she would still be able to practise.
Fast forward to earlier this year, and Caroline attended my Thursday morning class. Two hip replacements later, Caroline has gradually found her way back to the mat.
Caroline recently shared her story with Active Me, describing how yoga helped her regain confidence, improve her wellbeing, make new friends and rediscover activities she thought she had lost forever. One of my favourite quotes from her case study is:
"I've got my yoga mojo back."
Her story is a reminder that yoga isn't about being flexible, strong or perfect. It's about meeting yourself where you are. Whether you're living with arthritis, recovering from surgery, managing pain, rebuilding confidence, or simply feeling nervous about starting something new, there is a practice that can support you.
If you've been thinking about stepping back onto the mat, let Caroline's journey encourage you. Despite injury, pain, fear or uncertainty, it is possible to begin again.
This Friday, we're celebrating International Day of Yoga with a free afternoon of taster sessions at Frank Myler Pavilion. It's the perfect opportunity to explore different styles of yoga in a friendly, welcoming environment and discover what might suit you.
No experience is needed, and you'll be surrounded by people just like Caroline — taking that first step, or returning after time away.
