Whitstable Iaido

Whitstable Iaido The Tekisui Jyuku Dojo is a member of the Dai Nippon Iaido Kyokai and is associated with the Kent Budo Kai.

The dojo's focus is on the Japanese Martial Art of Iaido and Batto-do. Offering instruction in:

- Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu
- Toyama Ryu. Phil heads up the Tekisui Jyuku Dojo (滴水塾) in Whitstable, Kent, England. The Dojo was founded to provide a place for anyone with an interest in the Japanese sword to come and study. The Dojo was named by Shimojo sensei 英国　滴水 - EIKOKU TEKISUI JYUKU

me is 滴水 -Tekisui Jyuku, which has the following translation:

One droplet of water has little effect but many droplets can break a big rock.

A few photos of my visit to Slovenia, many of the photos are from Ales. I have found this week difficult to get back into the swig of things. My mind is still with my new and old friends back in Slovenia.

On Wednesday 19th August I finally made the long awaited visit to Slovenia to meet my old friend Ales; we have experienced a break in correspondence and meeting in England for too many years.

The visit was to reconnect and in the process we spent four days in his dojo with some of his students working on Iaido, Goju Ryu Karate and Kobujutsu.

It felt like only yesterday we last spent time together, the experience was profound for me, touching me too the core. Ljubljana's old town was stunning, busy with tourists but still remained peaceful. Ales and his students/friends felt like family and I was welcomed with open arms.

It was made that little bit more special when Ales phoned his long time friend and sensei Roy Hobbs. Again it has been many years since I spent time with Roy, so to briefly speak on a video call was good.

Ales and I will be planning further exchange visits to each others Dojos; with a tentative plan to return to Slovenia when Roy is next in town.

From the heart, I thank you Ales and the gang for your hospitality and the opportunity to share our Martial Arts knowledge again. Here's to our future endeavors.

Tonight's iaido keiko saw only myself and dojo in attendance :-). I took the opportunity to invest some time working on the kata of the Mugai Ryu. With Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu as my primary school of iai, it is enjoyable contrasting iaido kata from other schools, gaining a slightly different perspective in approach to the sword.

I am very fortunate that my sensei has studied several iaido schools and shares his knowledge and experiences with me. Its only when you have time alone focusing on your own development, that the realisation of the impact your sensei has on your life.

With life preventing me visiting my sensei this year, I am planning to fly him over from Kyoto in 2027 to spend some time with him. The visit will include him teaching a course which will be open to all students of iaido with their sensei's permission of course.

As the planning progresses I will issue updates. In the mean-time, if anyone has an interest in attending, please send a direct message or email [email protected], I am experiencing issues with my DNIK email address, once it is sorted I will post the address here.

In the meantime train well and look after yourselves.

As I sit in my room (at the hotel at Kansai airport, waiting to fly home tomorrow) reflecting on my visit with Shimojo sensei over the past nine days, I confirmed to myself yet again, no matter how much I think I know, or how well I think my Iaido technique is coming along; there is always room for improvement.

This is the single greatest tresure when studying the Martial Arts, there is always scope for improvement, the journey never ends.

I foresee a great deal of work ahead to preapare for my next visit with sensei.

I also have to find a new pair of knees :-).
