What a way to start the season!
The U16s came from behind to secure a fantastic 2β1 victory over Cotswold Rangers yesterday morning, with both goals coming from Kyann in a second-half performance that showed tremendous character, determination and togetherness.
The team adapted extremely well to a new formation and started the game strongly. We found plenty of success down our left-hand side, with AJ causing the Cotswold Rangers defence plenty of problems. At times, we worked the ball around really well, although we were frustrated that we weren't able to test their goalkeeper often enough.
Ethan was a constant menace in midfield, always looking to play those killer through balls, while Keegan's powerful driving runs from midfield helped us get the better of the opening exchanges.
There was also a debut for Tom in the first half, and he immediately showed his willingness to run in behind the opposition defence and break the lines. His movement caused Cotswold Rangers immediate problems and forced some last-ditch defending to keep us at bay.
As the game progressed, however, we began to lose some of our shape and Cotswold Rangers started to come back into the game. Jack E was exceptional at the heart of our defence, covering his defenders brilliantly and constantly clearing up any danger that came our way.
The second half saw Kyann introduced into midfield alongside Ethan, with the aim of getting us passing the ball more effectively and dictating the game. It worked. We began to control more of the play and pushed the team higher up the pitch.
Then, with around 25 minutes remaining, Cotswold Rangers took the lead.
But rather than drop our heads, every single Whitecroft player found another gear.
The response was outstanding.
Kyann, now pushed further forward into the striker role, broke the offside trap after a superb through ball found him in behind the defence. Showing exactly the composure we've come to expect from him, he calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
1β1. Game on. But we weren't finished.
Padge fought for and won virtually every ball played up to him, controlling the ball instantly before spraying passes out towards the wingers and helping us keep the pressure on.
Kurt simply never stopped running down the right wing. He chased everything, won everything, gave everything and linked up brilliantly with his teammates. His energy was infectious, and the whole team began to move the ball around with real authority.
Then came the moment that completed the comeback.
A free kick from Jack E was arrowed into the box and, when the ball fell perfectly to Kyann, he did what Kyann does. 2β1 to The Greeks!
From there, the team showed tremendous maturity. Players began organising those around them, making sure no opposition player was left unmarked. Everyone found a voice. Everyone started helping each other with positioning. The communication and togetherness on display were fantastic.
And importantly, we didn't simply sit back.
We continued to attack and looked for the opportunity to kill the game off. Ethan came agonisingly close when his long-range free kick rattled the bar, but the team held firm through the closing stages.
The final whistle brought a huge celebration and, quite rightly, it should.
This wasn't just a victory. It was a demonstration of character, resilience, hard work and togetherness. To adapt to a new formation, respond to going a goal behind and then find another level as a team speaks volumes about this group.
Two goals from Kyann secured the points, but this was a victory built on the contribution of every player.
A brilliant comeback. A massive three points. And a fantastic way to start the season. Whitecroft 2β1 Cotswold Rangers.
