What’s best Cardio or strength?

The simple answer is neither. This is because they do different jobs for your body.
• Cardio protects your heart and builds stamina.
• Strength training builds muscle and protects your bones.

Benefits of Cardio
• Heart health: Keeps your heart and lungs strong.
• Stamina: Helps you move longer without getting tired.
• Calorie burn: Burns many calories while you work out.
Benefits of Strength Training
• Muscle power: Makes your muscles bigger and stronger.
• Bone strength: Keeps bones dense and strong as you age.
• Metabolism: Builds muscle that helps your body burn energy all day.

Many people believe that cardio is best for weight loss. However, this only really burns calories during the exercise. Strength training increases your metabolism so continues to burn calories after the workout, this means it is actually better for weight loss.

Old fashioned weight training.

As we are close to Bank Holiday Weekend, I thought I share with you what I will be doing. I will be fighting to defend the throne of King Charles the first against the Rebel Roundheads. Reenacting one of the English Civil war battles.

I thought it might be interesting to look at the different way they Worked out in this time period.

There were 3 that I could find details on.

- Daily Labour: Most people were sufficiently active through manual work. Activities like hauling water, chopping wood, and farming acted as natural resistance training.

- Military Training: Soldiers and militias utilized heavy objects, engaged in rigorous wrestling, and practiced swordsmanship for functional, full-body strength

- Bell Ringing: For me this is the most interesting. During the 17th century people believed in a holistic approach to God, it was believed that God's grace and salvation included having a healthy body on earth. Because of that diet and exercise were key, and the best exercise was to ring the church bell. The young men who trained to be church bell ringers developed strong upper bodies from pulling heavy bells with thick ropes. Unfortunately, having a bell ringing constantly was annoying so to practice, engineers developed a "dumb bell"—a frame with a rope and pulley attached to heavy weights (this bell was "dumb" because it made no sound). Eventually The ropes were removed and weights were picked up by hand, so they began to resemble the dumbbells we know today.
