A síntese do estilo Goju-ryu é:

• a busca do combate a curta distância (sendo a estratégia de combate diferente do shiai kumite);
• movimentos circulares;
• aplicação de chutes baixos e varridos;
• a conciliação entre força, flexibilidade e respiração;
• contração muscular go e ju;
• a respiração sonora (ibuki).

Reflections on the year of gradings:

Wessex karate has not only managed to provide support, a kind compassionate community and fitness for all its members through the trials and tribulations of lockdown but has since recovered in leaps and bounds as a club.

With many of the more senior belt members moving away or on to other things over lockdown the club was heavily reliant on the brilliant Sensei Pete to take pretty much all of the sessions. But how things have shifted over the year…

He and a group of other Wessex students travelled to Portugal where Senseis Pete, Chris, Oliv and Jamie also took their dan grades in an intensely hot, heat wave in a room full of hundreds of karate-ka and NO air conditioning. But they all rocked it and did the club proud - Sensei Pete is now a 7th dan (something pretty hard to even comprehend, let alone achieve), Sensei Chris gained his 5th dan, Jamie his 4th dan and Oliv joined the sensei ranks with her first dan black belt.

An amazing achievement alongside Carly and Dan who took their black belts at the end of last year, 2022. Carly overcame amazing personal challenges to be there and took her grading by storm. Dan is now one of our younger blackbelts who has so much experience and wisdom to share.

Since Portugal, Nathan has gained his 2nd dan and Rico is now a shodan black belt. Amazing work guys. We all know how much effort it takes and personal hurdles to overcome to get there.

As Sensei said a few days back, whatever grading folk are taking, it takes huge amounts of guts and bravery to show up and put the effort in. Huge congrats to everyone in the club this year from stepping into the dojo for the first time, grading to yellow belt or achieving 7th dan black belt. We are so proud to be part of this together.

Oh and the kids won a trophy at the inter-club competition! Go juniors!

We now have many senior members who can support Sensei Pete with the running of the club and provide inspiration for all of us working through our own personal battles to learn the discipline and find the courage needed to travel on this amazing lesson in life, Goju Ryu Karate.
