DO YOU AVOID SQUATS?

The list of benefits the squat provides is HUGE. But to put it simply, if you aren't squatting; you are missing out a great deal.

The problem is, there is a large number of us that struggle to squat for one reason or another. A LOT of these reasons can be remedied by performing a box squat. Here are the differences and benefits:

#1 - Promotes better technique! Squatting to a box will teach you to sit back into the squat more. This is beneficial from an injury prevention and overall squat performance standpoint.

#2 - Sitting back more is going to utilise more of the posterior chain (a fancy word for the glutes, hamstrings and back).

#3 - Minimises stress on the knee. Using the hips more and not bending at the knee as much is going to decease the stress put on the knee!

#4 - From an athletic development standpoint, it can often be used as a tool to promote and generate more power "out of the hole" (the bottom position of a squat). Great for jumping etc.

#5 - It acts as a safety net. If you are not completely familiar or comfortable squatting usually, using a box can help increase your confidence and make the exercise less daunting.

The list can go on and on.... Give them a go next time you're in!!

Current research suggests that stretching between 30-60 seconds yields the greatest improvements in mobility. Try stretching tight muscles for 3 SETS OF 30-60 SECONDS and repeat this 3-4 times a week.

Pre-Exercise static stretching has been shown to reduce performance by damaging muscle fibres. Therefore it is best to stretch after exercise, or when you will have a long period of rest, for example just before bed.

While stretching can sometimes seem like the 'Chicken and Vegetables' of the exercise world (being beneficial, but boring), it should be a cornerstone of any exercise program to help ensure improved performance while remaining injury free.
