It's Day 49 of the challenge and we're continuing with our 'Back to School' theme.

This means we're focusing on our core groups of skills that are key to a child's physical education and talking a little bit about why they matter.

Today's focus is ball chasing. Give the challenge in the video a try!

Ball chasing is all about tracking a moving ball, moving quickly to get into the right position and controlling our body as we reach it. It’s a skill children use across loads of different games and sports and it’s great fun to practise!

Today's focus is seated balance. Next week we'll be bringing you a full set of sated balance challenges so to give you a head start, let's think about why a seated balance might be important.

βš–οΈ Why are seated balances so important for children?

Balancing doesn’t always mean standing on one leg! Seated balance activities are a great way for children to develop control, stability and awareness of their bodies.

Practising seated balances can help children:

⭐ Build core strength - strengthening the muscles that help support posture and movement.

βš–οΈ Develop stability and control - learning to hold the body steady in different positions.

🧠 Improve body awareness - understanding how small adjustments can help them maintain their balance.

It's Day 45 of the challenge and we're slowing things down a little bit this week to get into 'back to school' mode.

This week, we're focusing on our core groups of skills that are key to a child's physical education and talking a little bit about why they matter.

Today's focus is jumping and landing.

🦘 Why are jumping and landing skills so important for children?

Jumping might look like simple fun, but learning how to jump and land safely and confidently helps children develop lots of important physical skills.

Jumping and landing activities can help children:

⭐ Build strength and power – developing the muscles needed to push off the ground and control their body when they land.

🧠 Develop body awareness - helping children understand how their body moves through the air and how to position themselves safely.

🀸 Improve balance and coordination - learning to control take-off, flight and landing and how these are connected.

⚽ Build foundations for qactivities and sports - jumping and landing are used in everything from skipping and hopscotch to gymnastics, dance and lots of different sports.

πŸ™Œ Build confidence in movement - practising different types of jumps and landings helps children feel more comfortable trying new physical challenges.

Children can practise jumping and landing almost anywhere, trying different distances, directions, heights and shapes as their confidence grows.

This week, we're focusing on our core groups of skills that are key to a child's physical education and talking a little bit about why they matter.

Today's focus is ball handling.

⚽ Why are ball handling skills so important for children?

Throwing, catching, rolling and controlling a ball might seem like simple activities, but they help children develop a whole range of important physical skills.

Ball handling skills aren't just for budding footballers. Ball handling activities can help children:

⭐ Develop hand-eye coordination- Learning to track a moving object and respond with the right movement.

🀲 Improve control and accuracy- Helping children judge how much force, speed and direction they need.

🧠 Build spatial awareness- Understanding where they, the ball and other people are in the space around them.

πŸƒ Build foundations for other activities- Throwing, catching and controlling objects are fundamental skills used across lots of different sports and games.

πŸ™Œ Build confidence in movement- Practising simple ball skills gives children opportunities to experience success and feel more confident joining in.

And ball handling doesn’t have to mean complicated drills! A ball, a little bit of space and a few minutes of practice can go a long way.

🦩 Why is standing on one leg so important for children?

It might seem like a simple challenge, but balancing on one leg helps children develop some really important physical skills.

Balance activities can help children:

⭐ Build stability and core strength - helping them control and support their body as they move.

🧠 Develop body awareness - learning where their body is in space and how to adjust their movements.

⚽ Build foundations for other skills - balance plays a part in everything from running and jumping to kicking, climbing and changing direction.

🀸 Improve coordination and control - encouraging different parts of the body to work together.

Games week continues!

Today, we're playing Seaside Sculptures.

Watch the video for the instructions and see if you can make some interesting seaside shapes.

Remember every child is different. If you need extra support, lean on your partner or a wall or chair for balance.

If you want to challenge yourself further, try and involve a one footed balance in each of your sculpture poses.

Games week continues!

Today, we're playing Squirrel Grand Prix.

Watch the video for the instructions and see if you can beat your personal best time!

Remember every child is different. If you need extra support, you don't need to time anything, just enjoy it! You may find a heavier ball like a basketball is easier to manoeuvre.

If you want to challenge yourself further, try something a little bit more unruly than a regular ball such as a balloon.
