Weston Karate Club

Weston Karate Club Kevin established Weston karate club back in 1984. It has been located at Hutton Moor leisure centre, Weston Super Mare since it opened.

The club is supported by 4 dedicated senior male/female black-belt instructors, with over 140 years between them. Our club is run by 4 expert black-belt instructors, each with over twenty years experience. Kevin Roberts (5th dan), Michelle Roberts (3rd dan), Shaun Walsh (2nd dan) and Lewis Alder (2nd dan).We train in the style of Shotokan Karate. There are over fifty current members ranging from w

hite to black belts. All sessions are held in the main hall at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre. Sessions are Monday & Wednesday 6pm for beginners to Orange belt. 7pm for Red belt and above and adult beginners. Our beginner classes offer the opportunity for any parents to train with their child. Our minimum age for junior students is 7 years old and we have no upper limit. We have members from all walks of life and you do not need to be especially fit in order to take up karate. However it will be invaluable in helping to develop and maintain good cardio-vascular fitness. Karate helps to develop flexibility, confidence, balance and self-defence skills. It's also a great way to meet people from the local area.

During a Kata Focus Course held at Portchester this weekend, Sensei Kevin was presented with his Rokudan (6th Dan) diploma by Sensei Mervyn O'donnell Hachidan (8th Dan).
Sensei Kevin started studying Shotokan Karate in 1974 and achieved Shodan (1st Dan) in 1986, some 40 yrs ago.
Sensei Kevin has been a close friend with Sensei Mervyn for over 40yrs.
Sensei Kevin has always looked to Sensei Mervyn for guidance and inspiration.

We at Weston Karate Club would like to send our heartfelt congratulations to Sensei Kevin. We are proud to being part of Sensei Kevin's continued journey.

After finishing training at our Dojo on Wednesday night we travelled down to Bournemouth to visit our friends at Kanku Karate Club. We chose to join the line up with Sensei Mark & Sensei Graham's students.
It was a very intense & physical class which we thoroughly enjoyed. They took us through Kihon & Jyu Ippon. Thank you to both Sensei.
Friday we travelled to Porchester to join in at Karate Club. This class revisited most of the 1st Dan Kata.
Saturday morning we were back in the Dojo at Portchester for the Kata Focus class. We were joined by Dave & Danielle who travelled down from Weston to join us.
The chosen Kata was Chinte which was studied indepth. This was lead by Sensei Mervyn O'donnell. We would like to take the time to send our thanks to all the Sensei who we trained under & our Karate friends we trained with.

We had a very enjoyable time covering basics & Jyu Kumite.
