Thought green keeping was just cutting grass? Think again!

From fixing machinery to battling the elements, our green keepers are always up to the challenge of keeping our course open all year round and keepjng our greens some of the best in the West! Last week our irrigation system showed some faults. Thinking it was a breakage in an old pipe, our team investigated and found the issue.

In other news, we have some exciting specials on the menu in the clubhouse this weekend. Jellied eel pie, anyone?!

Weston super Mare Golf Club hosted the Somerset Golf Captains in a match against the Warwickshire Golf Captains on Wednesday 10th June, one of 18 such county matches played during the season. Club Captain John Davidson partnered SGC Captain of Captains Marcus Woodward in the first of the eight four ball matches, getting the fixture started in the traditional way by hitting the first tee shot. The course was in excellent condition and the promised showers held off for the afternoon for a change. The Warwickshire team were very complimentary about the course and the hospitality despite Somerset’s resounding 6 ½ - 1 ½ victory. Having won the annual Four Counties match in Berkshire the day before, the Somerset team were on a bit of a roll!

Lily and the catering team kept the players well fed and Jean made sure that everyone was looked after in the bar. SGC Captain Marcus Woodward and Warwickshire captain George Whitehead both remarked on how welcome the Club had made their teams feel and the wind blew strongly enough for the players to experience true links conditions for their round.

Thanks to everyone for an excellent day of Captains golf!

🏆 LADIES CLEAR UP AT MENDIP SPRING 🏆

Three ladies from Weston featured in the prizes at the Somerset County 50+ Championships held at Mendip Spring GC today/28th May. Sue Stilwell came 2nd overall in both the gross and nett categories. Dawn Chadwick came 3rd nett overall as well as coming 2nd gross in her age category. Marlyn Jackson was also in the prizes coming 1st nett in her age category. Well done Weston ladies 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼.

We recently travelled away to Minchinhampton Golf Club to contest this years club match.

This fixture was first played in 1893 when the Minch team travelled to Weston via charabanc.

Weston retained the trophy with a 3-2 victory, special mention to our Club Champion Matt Shaw who eagled the last to finish -2 on his first round at the course.

Following the fixture featured customary meals and speeches, presentation of the trophy, and our Club Captain John Davidson was presented with an MGC engraved crystal glass and MGC club tie.

To recognise the prestige of the fixture, our team comprised of past Club Captains and this years teams captains who John thanked for supporting the club.

We were extremely well hosted throughout and look forward to the home fixture next year when they will be hosted by our Club Captain elect Adam Royle.
