🩻 WHAT IS AN ANNULAR TEAR?
Another MRI phrase that can sound much worse than it actually is.
Your spinal discs have a tough outer layer surrounding a softer centre.
An annular tear simply means there is a small split or crack in that outer layer.
It can be painful, especially if the area becomes irritated.
But — just like disc bulges — annular tears can also be found in people who have no symptoms at all.
So seeing “annular tear” on your MRI doesn’t automatically tell us:
❌ how much pain you should have
❌ how strong you are
❌ what you can and can’t do
We still need to match the MRI with your symptoms, movement and clinical assessment.
Your MRI matters — but it doesn’t tell your whole story. 💙
