Horse Riders - you NEED this exercise in your lives

The one leg circle. This exercise is a WD40 for our hips. But outside of riding it gets you to use your hip joint for how it’s meant to be used, circumduction not just stuck in flexion!

What it helps Pilates edition ⬇️

Leg isolation and unilateral work
Different use of breath
Unilateral stability
Hip joint mobility
Works hamstrings, quads, abdominals and muscules around hip joint

What is helps riding edition ⬇️

🐴 Working one leg at a time, our sport doesn’t allow us this

🐴 You have to be so aware what the stability side of your body is doing whilst you’re moving the other limb ( diagonal patterning, how our horses move)

🐴 Pelvic stability!!! So you can put any leg aid on required and your torso and pelvis, pardon the pun, stay stable

Teaching points ⬇️

❌ Avoid over using the hip flexors
✅ Imprint your spine in to the mat using your abdominals
✅ Be aware of your foot and leg alignment
✅ Connect your rib cage
✅ Be aware of your pelvis trying to roll laterally keep it in the middle
❌ don’t kick the wall 😂
✅ Keep the movement fluid and controlled ( now doesn’t that sound like any moment in riding)

A very special Pilates session 🫏

One of my fabulous students, Kirsty and her friends host their own camp and I was honoured when she asked me to run a Pilates session for them.

The venue was Kirsty’s lovely home and the sun ☀️ came out for us.

Obviously I packed my spikey balls and we used them for some hip strengthening and lengthening exercises and core control & coordination. Everyone had a lovely feeling after the session, thoroughly enjoyed it 🥰 and all did brilliantly 👏

The extra special treat for my visit was meeting Kirsty’s beautiful donkeys Austin & Earl 😍 I am in love 🫏♥️♥️

Equestrians: A simple exercise that will help your hips become more effective in flexion.

🌟Single leg extension🌟

Golden for riders as it works our hips from flexion to extension. Doing this will help your hips become more effective in flexion.

What it helps Pilates edition ⬇️

✅ Pelvic stability ( works your glute med and your glute minimus)
✅ Hip mobility and strength
✅ Core work ( when adding on curl up)
✅ Hamstrings

What it helps riding edition ⬇️

🐴 Even though the legs are moving, it’s a great core exercise as your torso is having to stay steady whilst your hip stabilisers have to activate to help steady your pelvis to move your legs. Sound familiar?

Adding the curl up just helps you work that little bit more 😊

Try it and feel the difference

What does your pet cat have to do with Pilates?!

On a recent day camp, I gave an introduction to Pilates session to a lovely group. We worked on body awareness.

One of the ladies informed me that her horse has a tendency to make a banana 🍌 shape to the left. When we started doing the corrective work lay on the floor, it became apparent that the rider did the same….. 🤔

We did a little bit of detective work and realised that this lady also has a cat 🐈 At night her cat likes to sleep by her left ankle, so she opens up the left side of her body and her legs go to the right, creating a banana 🍌 shape.

This repeated pattern has become her body’s universal pattern and the body believes that this is “straight”.

Our daily habits and movements all influence our body, for better or worse! Practising Pilates helps you become more body aware and gives you the tools to reset and change those unhelpful habits.

I had no idea of the benefits….

I started doing Pilates when I was running a livery yard. I did a lot of heavy lifting and I was constantly on the move. I decided that I needed to find an exercise that was more gentle on my body and would help me stretch out.

I thought that exercise was Pilates…..

Yes, it does help me stretch out and yes, it is a seemingly more gentle form of exercise than HIIT cardio and weights but……

Little did I know the amazing benefits that would follow from taking that first class……

Doing Pilates made me stronger. It made me more body aware, which has helped with all my bad riding habits 🫣 and it has helped make me a much better rider.
