It’s easy to say now with hindsight what I really needed as a first time mum. I think it’s all too easy (even as someone who practices yoga and mediates) in our fast paced, forward thinking, risk averse world to see and feel into the here and now. Your invisible pregnancy bubble forms a protective barrier around you and your baby - no one else’s thoughts, feeling or judgements should enter your space, but once you notice that happen back off, ask for someone else’s care and then meditate, come back into your body to gather yourself. Think hard about who you really want to envelop your pregnancy bubble. Side note, your birth partner not matter how devoted and willing is not going to be good enough. You need someone who truly gets you, who can fully support your birth wishes, offer emotional support and act as a listening ear with wisdom at your disposal. Those ‘helpful’ videos showing you what you should be eating and drinking to bring on labour, the side stepping movements, the big hill walks - avoid them. You need your energy for the big day, mental and physical energy. Put them down. Eat the dates if you like them but don’t stress about eating exactly 6 a day. Nap, meditate, take a bath and breathe. Don’t obsess about batch cooking. You think you’re relaxed but are you really?
I say this not to worry you if you are a first time mum or even someone who is about to give birth with their subsequent baby. But please, make sure you have someone on your side, someone who isn’t your birth partner. Ask yourself whether your midwife is that person. Allow yourself the space to get out of your thinking brain and into your body. What do you feel in your body, what do you smell? Is there a word or affirmation you can repeat over and over that helps you relax? (Mine was “you are safe”)
