BRITISH EVENTING STATEMENT

It is with immense sadness that British Eventing confirms the tragic loss of Sophie Fouracre and Kerry Donoghue following separate incidents on Saturday 18th July 2026.

Sophie Fouracre, aged 34, was fatally injured in a cross-country accident riding Rhubarbsfox Brittania, at Swalcliffe Park, Oxfordshire, England.

Hours later at Penrith in Cumbria, Kerry Donoghue, aged 42, died following a cross-country accident riding Carneyhaugh Rua.

At both venues, the event medical teams responded immediately and provided emergency treatment. Despite their best efforts sadly neither rider could be saved.

Both horses were examined by the attending veterinary team and were found to be uninjured.

Rosie Williams, Chief Executive of British Eventing, said: “The British Eventing community is heartbroken. On behalf of everyone at British Eventing, I want to extend our deepest condolences to Kerry and Sophie's families, friends and loved ones at this devastating time. Our thoughts are also with their fellow competitors, organisers, officials, volunteers and everyone who has been affected by these tragic events.

“We are immensely grateful to the organisers, doctors, paramedics, veterinary teams, officials and emergency services at both events for the professionalism, compassion and care they showed in the most difficult of circumstances.

“The loss of two members of our eventing family on the same day is almost beyond words, and we know the sadness of these events will be felt profoundly across the sport for some time to come.”

In accordance with British Eventing's safety and incident review procedures, comprehensive reviews of both accidents will now be undertaken.

We recognise the impact these tragic events will have across the eventing community. Anyone affected is encouraged to seek support through the British Eventing Support Trust Helpline, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on 07780 008877.

We respectfully ask that the privacy of both families is respected during this incredibly difficult time.

Good news for Scottish eventers!

South of Scotland Horse Trials , which joined the British Eventing Official calendar last year, is bringing intermediate classes back to the region for the first time in three years. The event has also secured a new title sponsor, estate agency Fine & Country.

The time has come - I have decided to hang up my boots. I started my 46th year of eventing this year and rode at Tweseldown and Moreton (finished 2nd on Barry 😜), and have now decided its time to stop competing and to send my last event horses to Emily to continue their career.

I have loved my eventing life, and feel so lucky to have had so many amazing horses, and have wonderful memories which will stay close to my heart forever.

Since the London Olympics I’ve loved producing my homebreds and competing up to 3*.

I will be busy with my breeding programme and producing the young stock, plus will be supporting Emily more. I can now go on holiday and not feel guilty about the horses I should be riding!!

Thank you so much to my family, friends, owners, grooms, sponsors, vets, farriers and wonderful supporters that have made this journey, over the many years, so incredibly special.

Sleep well Blueberry and Uti, two of the greatest horses of our generation.

It is with immense sadness that we have said goodbye to Valegro and Uthopia and without question, this is a loss that just feels hard to comprehend.

Trying to write a tribute to these two horses feels harder than I imagined. The yard just doesn’t feel the same without them, there’s an emptiness in the air.

Valegro and Uthopia did more than win medals and write history, they gave our sport a golden era. They both showed that greatness can be gentle, sensitive and harmonious and they made a nation proud and inspired so many.

Being part of their journey will always remain one of my proudest achievements and the whole team and myself are deeply grateful for the joy they gave to us at home but also to their fans around the world.

Their entire lives ran in parallel; they travelled to the shows side by side, lived in neighbouring stables, grazed in the same fields and retired together. Their bond and companionship were absolute.

As life as old boys advanced, so too did the health challenges, so allowing them to leave this world together was the final act of loyalty and dignity I felt I could give them, honouring a partnership that had never been separated in life.

They leave behind a huge void, and the yard has changed forever and so have we. They were our family and I will love and miss them always. The impact they had will remain but sadly, we don’t get to keep horses forever.
We only get to carry what they leave inside us. And these two left us so much.

✅𝙈𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙖𝙩.
Bacteria and microbes produce heat when fermenting fibre in the hind gut.
✅𝘾𝙝𝙚𝙘𝙠 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙗𝙪𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙨.
Plastic is more likely to cracking in low temperatures. Rubber buckets may be a better option.
✅𝙆𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙡𝙮 𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙢. Horses can reduce their water intake in cold weather.
Topping up their water with hot water & insulating buckets to reduce freezing helps.
✅𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙠 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙨.
Placing apples or plastic balls in troughs can sometimes help against them refreezing.
✅ 𝘼𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙢 𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝? Check how warm they are under their rug, and consider a heavier rug for a clipped, aged or fine haired coat. A full natural winter hair coat provides excellent insulation without rugging.
✅𝘼𝙫𝙤𝙞𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩. Movement improves gut motility, which in turn reduces the risk of impaction colics.
Soaking feeds and a sloppy mash can improve water intake & gut motility.
✅ 𝙂𝙧𝙞𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙡𝙠𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙨 - ice can catch us all out. Always check your route before leaving the stables, gritting or using old bedding to cover slippy areas can reduce slipping and injury to you or your horse.
