Match Report: Bagborough CC vs Over Stowey CC
In an absolute thriller that went straight down to the wire, Bagborough secured a dramatic 10-run victory over Over Stowey in a 40-over contest for the ages.
The Toss (17 and Counting!)
Before a ball was even bowled, history was made at the middle. Skipper Henry Stirzaker called correctly yet again, marking his 17th toss win of the season. Unsurprisingly, the skipper elected to bat first on a track promising plenty of runs.
Bagborough’s Batting: The Captain’s Masterclass
Bagborough posted a formidable 271/9 in their 40 overs, anchored by a sublime, match-winning century from the skipper himself.
The Top Order Support: James Middleton (28) and Jack Martin (33) set a solid foundation at the top, followed by useful contributions from Tom Eve (25) and a blisteringly fast 43 off 25 balls from Dan Raffill.
The Captain’s Innings: Entering the crease, Henry Stirzaker put on a clinic. Striking 15 fours and clearing the rope 5 times, Henry raced to 112 off just 74 deliveries at an explosive strike rate of 151.35. Remaining unbeaten at the close, it was a proper captain’s knock that put Bagborough in total command.
Over Stowey’s Chase & The Guest Stars
Chasing 272, Over Stowey pushed Bagborough all the way. A cheeky nod goes to the opposition for calling in a bit of back-up, drafting in a couple of Stogumber ringers to bolster the ranks—though even with some extra neighborly firepower, Bagborough held the line!
Mark Hill led the charge for the visitors with a well-fought 64, while Kieran Barrow chipped in with 29.
Heroics & Heartbreak in the Field
Bagborough’s bowling unit put in a disciplined team shift to keep the run rate under control:
Jake Bond led the attack with 2/53 from his 9 overs.
Dan Raffill (1/69) and Henry Stirzaker (1/60) claimed vital breakthroughs, with the captain also snagging two catches and pulling off a crucial run-out to dismiss Hill.
David Stirzaker’s Sacrifice: David bowled a fantastic, economical spell of 1/17 off his 4 overs to stem the flow of runs. However, after serving one up a bit too close to the slot, the batsman smashed it straight back at him—resulting in a broken thumb for his troubles. Absolute heroics taking one for the team, and everyone at Bagborough wishes David a swift recovery!
Sure, we could have just posted all nine fielders directly on the boundary ropes from ball one, conceded the steady trickle of singles, and coasted to an easy win without the heart-pounding drama. But where’s the fun in that?
Down to the Wire
With Over Stowey needing tight runs late on, the match boiled down to a tense final over. Mathew Raffill and the bowling unit held their nerve when the pressure was at its absolute peak, restricting Over Stowey to 261/6 as the final ball was bowled.
A hard-fought 10-run win, 31 points in the bag, and another coin toss safely in the bank!
