LOCAL PLAN UPDATE / SKI SLOPE

For those that are tracking the developments of the Local Plan (for housing) in Welwyn Hatfield, linked here are the latest public consultation documents on the Main Modifications to the plan.

The Gosling site (including ski slope) is HS6 (Han 91). You can view the details for this site on page 58 of the document. It’s possible to comment on this plan if you wish, but only in relation to the modification.

The proposed modification to this site is to reduce the number of housing units from 250 to 100. The ski clubs, schools and academies that use the ski slope remain determined to keep this very rare and valued community asset, and so we remain keen to engage with GLL, council and other bodies in steering toward a solution of retaining the ski slope as part of any Gosling redesign, whether that includes housing or not.

Annual ’Sparkly Slalom’ race for the WGC race club next Friday!

**SPARKLY SLALOM EVENT - 4th NOV 2022**

Book now for your place at the Sparkly Slalom. Fri 4th Nov, 6.45pm. Same time slot as usual Friday training. Timed slaloms runs and duals. Currently open to club members only.

Looks like the Welwyn slope is getting ready for the 2022 summer race season. Expecting hundreds of ski racers, children and adults, from across the region and country taking part in competitions.

Saturday 5th March 2022.
It’s BUSY at the slope today!

The Saturday ski lesson sessions are very active with children of all ages improving their skiing skills. Great learning platform for those going on ski holidays, skiing with school or looking at ski racing.

The future of this facility remains uncertain, and will probably remain uncertain over the next couple of years. The best action is to let EVERYONE and ALL GROUPS in the Welwyn Hatfield community and beyond know the facility is here….and should be used. Schools, youth groups, adults, colleges, community groups can benefit from this facility at an affordable price.

It is now well used. The more it is used, the more difficult the decision to close it down!

With dry slope races coming up over the next few months, training is required, along with the usual Welwyn fun! ⛷⛷

Nice article about Dave Ryding and where he started out - 25 years ago on a dry slope in Pendle, Lancashire.

I wrote a similar article after his amazing win, stressing the crucial importance of retaining and investing in our UK ski facilities, including our dry slopes! I sent it to the WH Times. They didn’t publish it.

There is a curious expression in the German-speaking world for skiers who come from outside the sport's snow-covered heartlands - they call them "the exotics".

Incredible achievement by British ski racer Dave Ryding. Many congratulations to him. And it all started for him on a UK dry slope!

This is another major leap ahead for British snowsports. From here is the optimum time to invest further in our UK snowsports facilities as many kids will be inspired by Dave Ryding.
