Massage and Parkinson's

It was a therapy session today at the Luton Parkinson's group. A massage therapist should definitely be part of a Parkinson's multidisciplinary team. A good therapist will be able to feel the difference between rigidity, tension, tightness and imbalance. They can then advise what exercise, stretching or strengthening you need. In this photo, I am using a massage gun. I find this is the best tool to alleviate rigidity quickly and efficiently.

Meet the 93-year-old from Luton lifting weights to ease his Parkinson’s symptoms

Today we deadlifted. I wanted to do a session to prove to the people in my group what they are capable of. I wanted to show how when you believe in yourself, you can make great things happen. I started the session off telling all the individuals in my Luton group that they would deadlift 40 kg. All of them did it. We have a mixed group ranging from a 93 year old gentleman with an arthritic knee to a petite lady who weighs not much more than 40 kg herself. Chris Burford from the Burford Centre in Luton led the class and Helen Ogleby donated her time to capture the images. Now, on a bad day when anyone in my group is feeling low, frustrated or needs a pick me up, all they need to do is look at their photo and remember who they are and what is achievable. It has been 6-weeks since we started the Luton 's group. I have really enjoyed working alongside Parkinson's UK and the Bushmead Community Hub. Already, it feels like a community group and the sessions have made an impact on the group members. The class is now at the point that it is difficult for me to give everyone my full attention, so from the 29th of July, we are adding another class. The 1st group will run from 1pm for an hour and will focus on improving mobility and activities of daily living. There will then be a 15-minute tea break so we can all have a chat. The 2nd class runs from 2:15 - 3:15 pm and will be more intensive, focusing on Neuroplasticity, neuroprotection and neurorestoration.
The cost is £5, no charge for family members or carers.
