Gosling Sports Park Update
The latest decision from GLL is that there is no prospect of agreeing a license by 1st October 2019 and they have deferred the issue of the license until 1st January 2020 at the earliest.
On the positive side, GLL have guaranteed Users access to the building for the foreseeable future, with the current arrangements. On the negative side they are suggesting that they will operate the building themselves rather than issue a license to Save Gosling.
Save Gosling intend to challenge the proposal that GLL should operate the building and remain committed to agreeing a license from 1st Jan 2020

The national ‘This Girl Can’ campaign www.thisgirlcan.co.uk/ is running from the 17 – 23 June 2019 in Welwyn Hatfield and we, WH BC and WelHat Sports, would like to see as many clubs, organisations, schools and leisure providers involved, see one.welhat.gov.uk/ThisGirlCan. The online activity calendar is now live and anyone who is running activities can promote them on our calendar.

They can download and complete the interactive activity form on the website (one.welhat.gov.uk/ThisGirlCan) and return to [email protected] once completed.

Save Gosling Campaign public meeting for clubs, schools and the community, 7:30pm, Wednesday 20th March, now in Collingwood suite

This is to update everyone and present ways forward, including sports hall only, and taking over the building from GLL and running it ourselves.

The meeting will also elect a new committee to take the project forward I am standing down as chairman.

Please encourage as many of your members to attend as possible

Save Gosling! Yesterday, the meeting room designated by GSP-GLL's site manager Craig Woodward had to be abandoned for the bar area owing to the large numbers that turned up.
Craig gave a short presentation that basically stated:
- the annual loss of the the facility was in the region of £200,000 per year and was unsustainable
- they were helping affected clubs and users to alternative venues.

Announcement of the closure of the Northern buildings at Gosling Sports Park without prior consultation

We have been receiving concerns from clubs at Gosling Sports Park that they have been given notice that the centre will be closing permanently 31st March 2019.
We have also, received concerns from Welwyn Garden schools for whom the site is essential for curriculum and after school activities: some 20 primary schools and at least 2 secondary schools use the facility on several occasions each year.

There are 4 public sports halls in Hatfield with a total of 23 badminton courts but only the one hall open to the public in the daytime in WGC and that is Gosling with 5 courts: it is a unique and indispensable to WGC.

It would appear that GLL have been running down the centre for several months: the Reception is invariably empty - see one example photo taken Saturday 22Dec18 during badminton sessions.

Dave Bartlett, Vice-chairman WHSPAA, has written detailing the concerns of users and our complete disappointment at lack of prior consultation to Steve Ryan, Managing Director, Gosling Sports Park, and Matt Rayner, Community Partnership Manager, WH BC.
We hope they will reconsider, or at least give us the opportunity to discuss it and perhaps find alternative solutions.

East and North Herts CCG Thank You to Volunteers

Organised by Mark Edwards the E&NH CCG gave a Thank You celebration to NHS volunteers on Wednesday, 12 December, at the Focolare Centre, WGC. Volunteers who came from groups including the hospitals and doctors’ surgeries’ Patient Participation Groups, heard achievements of the year, opportunities for 2019, and presentations from several volunteer groups.
Louise Smith, Regional Parkrun Organiser, gave a brief history of parkruns with details of all those within Hertfordshire. She made particular mention of the opportunities for GP practices and PPGs across the UK to engage patients through the collaboration with their local parkrun to become “parkrun practices”: see www.rcgp.org.uk/clinical-and-research/our-programmes/clinical-priorities/parkrun-practice.aspx .
Dave Bartlett, WHPSAA vice-chairman, gave a presentation on the opportunities for physical activity for PPGs by engaging with their Community Sports Networks in the E&NH CCG area (Active North Herts, Sport Stevenage, Active East Herts and Welwyn Hatfield Sport & Physical Activity Alliance) and Herts Sports Partnership. Particular detail of WHSPAA included the 180 clubs and sports sessions in the borough that provided activities for over 10,000 people each week and a joint healthy living project through councillor Steve Roberts for Peartree ward that was at an early stage.
Herts Musical Memories Creative Director, Kerry Brabant, spoke briefly about her work with people with dementia and their carers. She then led an enjoyable carol singing session before we all networked - and had mince pies!
