Glenvale Park Reserves 1-1 Kettering Rovers (Glenvale win 3-1 on penalties)
Glenvale Park Reserves needed penalties to see off a spirited Kettering Rovers side in a match that showcased everything good about Sunday league football.
Kettering took the lead around the half-hour mark with a strike from distance that caught the wind and sailed over Dec in the Glenvale goal — a moment of fortune as much as quality, but one that put the visitors ahead.
Glenvale drew level just after the hour. Harrison's free-kick cannoned back off the wall, but he reacted fastest, volleying low into the box where Connor was on hand to slot home the equaliser.
Neither side could find a winner in normal time, sending the match to penalties, where Glenvale held their nerve to edge it 3-1.
Kettering Rovers review: A great contest and real credit to Kettering for their sportsmanship throughout. Their centre-backs were the standout performers, giving Glenvale's forwards little room to work with and making clear-cut chances hard to come by all game.
Glenvale review: Plenty of good football and a number of opportunities created, even if they weren't always taken. The real story was at the back — defensively this was arguably Glenvale's best performance in recent weeks, with very few errors. Dec was excellent in goal, claiming everything played into the box and starting attacks with sharp distribution.
Men of the Match: Sanmi and Rob. Sanmi was outstanding as the lone holding midfielder, covering huge amounts of ground, snuffing out danger before it developed, and still finding time to drive forward and create chances. Rob marshalled the back line brilliantly — composed, largely mistake-free, and vocal in organising those around him.
