Reflection Day 2
My very first post on this page was on 27 November 2018. It was the day I shared what would become our company logo - a happy, splashing elephant.
Today, I'd love to share the story behind it.
My husband and I are originally from Zimbabwe, where we have totems. These are symbols, usually animals, that identify a family, clan, or lineage.
Much like a family surname, children inherit their father's totem. That means my husband and our children are of the elephant totem. In Ndebele, the language my husband speaks, the male elephant is Ndhlovu, and the females are called maNdhlovu. As a woman, however, you keep your own totem for life, so I remain an eland (maMpofu).
When I designed our logo, I knew I wanted an elephant splashing. It also needed a touch of pink to represent the female elephant and, more importantly, to symbolise my three daughters.
In many ways, they are the reason this journey began.
We built the pool for our girls, and eventually the decision to start the swim school and step away from pharmacy—yes, I'm actually a qualified pharmacist—was because of them. Working for myself meant I could build my life around my daughters rather than trying to fit them around my work. Swimming allowed me to do that. ☺
Our timetable was created with them in mind. I could drop them off at school, come home to teach baby swimming lessons, clean the house, cook dinner, collect them from school, and then continue with the afternoon lessons. Looking back, most of the teachers who eventually joined me were also mums, and our timetable worked perfectly for them too. It gave us a fulfilling life and a good work-life balance.
Every decision was made with one goal in mind—to be present for my girls while maintaining that balance.
That happy, splashing elephant has always represented more than a business. It represents family, heritage, and the love that inspired it all. It's an ode to my husband, but mostly to my children. 🩷🩷🩷💙 They remain the wind beneath my wings. ☺
