The Amateur Jockeys Association of Great Britain

This page is for all members and supporters of the AJA of GB (past, present and future). AJA membership includes WORLDWIDE INSURANCE against temporary injury whilst riding out or handling a racehorse for anyone who is not already covered by RIABS (ie for those who are not on the salary payroll of a licensed trained). You don't have to be a jockey to join but you do have to be under 70 years old. Please spread the word - we welcome all new members! Here are some examples of what we do:
2004: Introduction of bumpers for Cat A amateurs with conditionals as previously only Cat Bs allowed to ride in bumpers against pros; AJA membership changed to rolling 12 months from date of joining for better value; Amateur Championship Awards Dinner Dance introduced;
2005: Increase of ladies hurdle races from only 3 per year (to currently 15); Sponsorship of 6 point-to-points by AJA;
2006: Major improvements to insurance cover for all amateurs whilst riding under Rules from weigh out to weigh in, with benefit increased to £250 per week after first 28 days off sick together with many other new benefits such as rider to rider cover + £50 per day whilst hospitalised; Introduction of ladies Anglo/Irish hurdle challenge (Limerick & Newton Abbot); Increase in AJA race sponsorship;
2007: Introduction of all-inclusive insurance with AJA membership for riding out and handling racehorses anywhere worldwide with benefits of £150 per week whilst incapacitated for up to 104 weeks;
2008: Agreement reached with BHA for Cat B courses to be free of charge to first 24 amateur jockeys per year who apply, saving £700 per member; Agreement reached with FEGENTRI for point-to-point wins to count towards jockey's criteria of 5 wins in order to participate;
2009: Continuous work to add amateur races to Racing Calendar with Epsom gentlemen’s Derby now non-Fegentri + Epsom ladies Derby & Brighton ladies races now added; Free of charge Cat B course place numbers per annum increased from 24 to 36; Agreement reached for ladies hurdles to include 4 hurdle races for amateurs only within 15 per year which allows Cat As to ride;
2010: Cap of 10 wins for conditionals to revert raised to 25 + 48 month time limit scrapped; Cat B criteria now includes 15 completed ptp rides rather than 15 placed rides;
2011: BHA agree to AJA receiving 3% of prize money won by amateurs when riding against professionals (previously BHA retained all money) which will allow AJA to invest in additional amateur races within Racing Calendar;
2012: Various proposals currently under consideration with the BHA;
