Runs for Weston as Welford unbeaten in four.
A composed 75 not out from Mark Weston saw Welford to a six wicket victory over Great Alne at Synder Meadow.
Welford won the toss and skipper Will Gough elected to bowl first. Joe Walters started aggressively for the visitors striking Gough for three boundaries, but an edge behind was brilliantly taken by a diving Aidan Keavy to give Welford a crucial breakthrough. A tight opening spell from Victor Khumalo was rewarded as he bowled Jonathan Burch to leave the score 37-2.
Matthew Swift and Noman Mohammed dug in and took Great Alne to 69-2 from 23 overs. Both batsmen then cut loose, with Swift playing some excellent shots to bring up his first league fifty. Welford were on the back foot but Mohammed skied a catch to Mani Nadarajah in the covers to fall for 42. Steve Temple fell soon after as Gough picked up a third wicket thanks to a simple catch from Hugh Allen at mid off.
Swift kept going and at 156-4 a competitive score was on the cards. A wicket for Sean Eckersley exposed the tail and Swift struggled to keep the strike. Eckersley bagged a second as Swift fell for an excellent 76 with Will Gough taking a tumbling catch. At the other end, Charlie Tyler efficiently mopped up the tail as the visitors collapsed to 161 all out.
Welford’s reply started disastrously as Hugh Allen chopped the first ball of the innings onto his stumps. Ragha Raj joined Mark Weston and the two scored quickly despite some threatening bowling. Raj was pinned lbw for nine with the score 40-2 which brought Mani Nadarajah to the crease.
Runs started to flow as both batsmen picked up boundaries on either side of the wicket. Weston brought up his fifty with a boundary as the score passed 100, but Mani was caught behind for 22 with 60 still need. Charlie Tyler kept the momentum going as the runs kept ticking along.
A legside delivery was skied by Tyler and Steve Temple did brilliantly to run and catch the ball one handed as Great Alne picked up another wicket. With only 20 runs to get though Welford were in a comfortable position. Some belligerent hitting from Sean Eckersley took Welford over the line to a comfortable six wicket victory with plenty of overs to spare.
Next week sees Welford travel to Tanworth hoping to continue their recent good form.
