Runs for Weston as Welford unbeaten in four.

A composed 75 not out from Mark Weston saw Welford to a six wicket victory over Great Alne at Synder Meadow.

Welford won the toss and skipper Will Gough elected to bowl first. Joe Walters started aggressively for the visitors striking Gough for three boundaries, but an edge behind was brilliantly taken by a diving Aidan Keavy to give Welford a crucial breakthrough. A tight opening spell from Victor Khumalo was rewarded as he bowled Jonathan Burch to leave the score 37-2.

Matthew Swift and Noman Mohammed dug in and took Great Alne to 69-2 from 23 overs. Both batsmen then cut loose, with Swift playing some excellent shots to bring up his first league fifty. Welford were on the back foot but Mohammed skied a catch to Mani Nadarajah in the covers to fall for 42. Steve Temple fell soon after as Gough picked up a third wicket thanks to a simple catch from Hugh Allen at mid off.

Swift kept going and at 156-4 a competitive score was on the cards. A wicket for Sean Eckersley exposed the tail and Swift struggled to keep the strike. Eckersley bagged a second as Swift fell for an excellent 76 with Will Gough taking a tumbling catch. At the other end, Charlie Tyler efficiently mopped up the tail as the visitors collapsed to 161 all out.

Welford’s reply started disastrously as Hugh Allen chopped the first ball of the innings onto his stumps. Ragha Raj joined Mark Weston and the two scored quickly despite some threatening bowling. Raj was pinned lbw for nine with the score 40-2 which brought Mani Nadarajah to the crease.

Runs started to flow as both batsmen picked up boundaries on either side of the wicket. Weston brought up his fifty with a boundary as the score passed 100, but Mani was caught behind for 22 with 60 still need. Charlie Tyler kept the momentum going as the runs kept ticking along.

A legside delivery was skied by Tyler and Steve Temple did brilliantly to run and catch the ball one handed as Great Alne picked up another wicket. With only 20 runs to get though Welford were in a comfortable position. Some belligerent hitting from Sean Eckersley took Welford over the line to a comfortable six wicket victory with plenty of overs to spare.

Next week sees Welford travel to Tanworth hoping to continue their recent good form.

After a rain affected outing last week the meadowmen welcome Great Alne to the home of cricket. A brighter forecast is in the offing and with a strong batting lineup, Gough and Wakelin will hope the boys make hay on the pitch they've been slaving over this past week. The return of Weston means this season's top scorer Ragha Raj drops down to 3. Tom Pinnock comes in at 7 for his first game of the year and Sean Eckersley will be hoping for more luck with the umpires this week as he looks to get another 5fer on the board.

This weekend saw a new club enter the tea championship. Mickleton put forward a strong showing with plenty variety (and quantity). A thoroughly satisfying away day for the boys until the rain came down and ruined it.

Welford denied by rain in local derby.

An unfortunate downpour ended Welford’s hopes of forcing a quick victory against Mickleton.

With the threat of rain all day, Mickleton won the toss and curiously decided to bat. Will Gough shelled an early chance of his own bowling but Matt Toms got Welford on the board with a run out soon after. Charlie Tyler was beating the outside edge, sometimes by margins so small they were almost non-existent, but found knocking back off stump to be an easier way of taking a wicket.

Gough returned for a second spell and picked up an lbw, before Aidan Keavy took a fantastic catch down the legside. When Victor Khumalo bowled Ben Ashley, Mickleton were in trouble at 59-5. Sean Eckersley was bowling with pace and a bouncer was too quick for ex-Meadowman Vasanth Sivaraman who could only glove it to Mani Nadarajah at slip. Eckersley then clean bowled Tim Dobinson-Law who had fought well for 40.

At 91-7, Welford were hoping to wrap up the innings quickly. Paul Nicholls was fortunate to survive an lbw appeal from Eckersley, but played some good aggressive shots after that. He managed 43 from 27 balls to drag Mickleton up to a score. Jack Lacey yorked Harry Righton for 13 before Ragha Raj finished off the innings with two quick wickets. Welford needed 140 to win.

Ragha started the innings positively, striking a big six over midwicket and a powerful four down the ground. He was bowled for a brisk 20 before Hugh Allen fell for 7 soon after. Mani Nadarajah and Charlie Tyler looked comfortable as Welford reached 45-2 from 9 overs. At that point, the rain got too heavy and didn’t stop in time for a resumption. Welford take ten points to Mickleton’s eight, but will feel frustrated they couldn’t force a win.

Next week sees Great Alne visit Synder Meadow with Welford looking to continue their recent run of form.

Eckersley Express too quick for Fladbury.

A five wicket haul for Sean Eckersley saw Welford to a comfortable 7 wicket win against Fladbury at Synder Meadow.

Skipper Will Gough won the toss and elected to bowl, a popular decision with those who hadn’t realised the champions league final kicked off at 5pm. Gough started well as he had the dangerous Richie Young well caught by Dave Fawcett at mid-off before clean bowling Daniel Young in the same over to leave the visitors 7-2.

Jack McCracken and Dan Barber fought back with a partnership of 41 before Mark Weston made the breakthrough bowling Barber for 17. A second wicket for Weston came soon after thanks to a good catch from Ragha Raj at midwicket. From that point on it was the Sean Eckersley show.

McCracken was caught behind for 25, the next two batsmen were comprehensively bowled and Eckersley picked up a fourth as a lifting delivery was gloved to Ragha running in from second slip. Dave Scorer was caught in the deep by Charlie Tyler to give Weston a third wicket before Eckersley wrapped up the innings in his final over as Will Gough took a simple catch. Fladbury had gone from 48-2 to 85 all out.

Ragha Raj started the reply with intent, smashing his first ball for four. He continued aggressively before playing one shot too many to get bowled for 26. Mani Nadarajah and Charlie Tyler both fell cheaply as Fladbury sensed a comeback.

Mark Weston was biding his time and found a willing ally in Dave Fawcett. The two batsmen accelerated towards the target as they took Welford to a comfortable victory, Weston finishing unbeaten on 29 with Fawcett striking a fluent 26 not out.

Welford move up to 5th in the league and travel to local rivals Mickleton next week hoping to back up another strong performance.

Welford and Hunningham honour John Rose in style.

A remarkable game of cricket saw Welford and Hunningham play out a thrilling tie.

Skipper Will Gough won the toss and elected to bat in hot conditions. Gough and Ragha Raj started watchfully against some probing bowling. Ragha was starting to find the boundary but misjudged a pull shot from Keshav Pal and was caught behind for 21, with Welford 37-1 from 15 at drinks.

The next 15 overs belonged to Hunningham as Mani Nadarajah was caught behind off Stu Bird and Charlie Tyler was brilliant caught in the gully by Keshav Pal. Will Gough and Sean Eckersley were still fighting but with the score 71-3 from 30 overs some acceleration was needed,

Gough broke the shackles taking 10 from an over as the partnership passed 50. Eckersley was finding his form too before Gough was bowled for 46. Eckersley was bowled for 22 and Martin Malone was caught behind to reduce Welford to 129-6. However Matt Toms and Jack Lacey gave the innings some late impetus as they dragged Welford to 155-7.

Hunningham started steadily reaching 30 without loss before Victor Khumalo found the edge and Mani Nadarajah took a good low catch behind the stumps. Will Gough had the dangerous Malcolm Bowman caught in the gully by Martin Malone, before took quick wickets from Gough and Charlie Tyler left the score 64-4.

Lewis Mundy and Stu Bird started to swing the game back in the host’s favour with Bird playing with lots of aggression. The score passed 100 and it looked like the game was slipping away, but Charlie Tyler bowled Bird for 32 and then picked up another next ball to make it 102-6.

Will Gough picked up a lucky wicket with a catch down the legside but Lewis Mundy seemed to be carrying his team to victory. With 22 needed he launched Tyler high into the air, but Ragha Raj took an incredible catch just inside the boundary. Jack Lacey then bowled Keshav Pal to make it 133-9 with Hunningham’s number 11 Will Murde unable to run.

With everyone out on the rope, Murden launched an incredible attack, hitting 22 off an over all in boundaries. This brought the scores level, but Sean Eckersley rescued the game trapping Carl Glover lbw to bowl Hunningham out for 155 and secure the tie.

An unbelievable game played in great spirit by both teams was a fitting way to send off Rosey. Next Saturday Welford host Fladbury as they look to continue the momentum from an excellent performance.

It is with great sadness that the club can announce the passing of John Rose, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning.

Put simply, John is the reason that the club exists. While the club’s history stretches back close to 100 years, it was not 100 years of continuous existence. John resurrected the club in 1986 and was a player, captain and later the president of the club for many years. It was only ill health that limited his recent involvement as without this he would happily have carried on as president forever.

He was the driving force behind many successful cricket club balls, vice president’s dinners, summer tournaments and more. He was involved in the construction of the old pavilion and it is a great shame that he won’t be around to witness the wonderful new pavilion which has taken its place.

Our thoughts are with John’s family, particularly his wife Jill who was also a keen supporter of the club.

We will be making an announcement in due course regarding an appropriate way to honour John’s legacy.

For now, we’d just like to thank John for everything he did for the club and recognise how many people have benefitted from his efforts.

We are back at the home of cricket tomorrow as Welford host looking to bounce back after last weeks narrow defeat
3 games in a row was a stretch too far for Weston, so Raj retains his opening spot after his flamboyant 99 last week
Also returns for GV , Allen Jnr and the man with the smoothest one liners in the outfield Vossy
Plenty of debate during the week with Keavy getting the gloves back from Mani after his impressive stint behind the stumps last week. Rumours of “football beers” tonight for Keavy so let’s hope he has his catching mitts ready and working

Congratulations to Ed Gough who is getting married on matchday, the skipper had a tough choice but his brothers wedding just about won the argument….poddy at the wheel 🫡
