Common does not mean normal.

One of the biggest myths I hear is:

"Well, I've had children and I'm getting older, so bladder leaks are just something I have to live with."

No.

Bladder leakage is common, but it isn't something you should automatically accept.

The reason you're leaking may be linked to:

• Pelvic floor dysfunction
• Hormonal changes
• Prolapse
• Bladder habits
• Constipation
• Core weakness
• Overactive pelvic floor muscles

That's why doing random pelvic floor exercises from the internet doesn't always work.

The first step is understanding what is actually causing the problem.

As a Women's Health Physiotherapist, I assess and treat bladder leakage, urgency, prolapse and other pelvic health concerns.

Pilates isn't just about your core.

Yes, we work on core strength, but we also work on:

• Balance
• Posture
• Mobility
• Breathing
• Coordination
• Overall body strength

Many people join because they want to move more comfortably, feel stronger or stay active as they get older.

The bonus is that all of these things work together.

Small, friendly, physio-led classes in Winscombe.

Do you cross your legs when you sneeze?

Avoid trampolines?

Plan journeys around where the toilets are?

Bladder leakage is incredibly common, particularly after having children and during perimenopause and menopause.

But common doesn't mean normal.

In this week's episode of Making Sense of Menopause, I'm talking about:

• Stress incontinence
• Urge incontinence
• Pelvic floor function
• Bladder habits
• Why pelvic floor exercises don't always solve the problem

Most importantly, I'm talking about why you don't have to simply put up with bladder leaks.

“Why am I suddenly getting pain or pelvic symptoms now?”

This is something I hear a lot from women in peri and post-menopause.

Because often, it feels like it’s come out of nowhere.

But there is a reason.

Hormonal changes can affect:
– muscle strength
– joint stability
– pelvic floor function
– recovery and resilience

So things that never used to be an issue… start to show up.

This is why I don’t just treat one symptom in isolation.

We look at the full picture — because that’s what actually gets results.

If your body is starting to feel different and you’re not sure why…

There’s a reason — and there’s a way to improve it.

Message me if you want help figuring it out.

“I’d been dealing with pelvic floor issues for a while… and didn’t know where to start.”

This is something I hear all the time.

Leaking, discomfort, things not feeling quite right…

But not knowing:
– who to go to
– what’s normal
– or what will actually help

This review sums up what matters most.

Feeling heard, understood, and having a clear plan.

Especially during peri and post-menopause, when your body is changing, it’s not just about doing random exercises and hoping for the best.

It’s about understanding what’s going on and treating the right thing.

If something doesn’t feel right — don’t ignore it.

Message me or book in and we’ll get you started.

"Getting older means I'll just have to accept losing strength and balance."

Actually, that's not entirely true.

Whilst our muscles naturally become weaker as we age, and balance can become more challenging, there is a lot we can do to help maintain and even improve our strength, mobility and confidence.

That's one of the reasons I love teaching Chair Pilates.

Using the chair for support allows you to work on:

• Strength
• Balance
• Mobility
• Flexibility
• Posture
• Confidence in movement

all in a safe and supportive environment.

Chair Pilates can be a great option if you're returning to exercise, have joint pain, struggle getting up and down from the floor, or simply want a gentler way to stay active.

Current spaces available:
Wednesday Chair Pilates – 1:00pm

"I'm too stiff for Pilates."

If I had a pound for every time I've heard that, I'd be retired by now.

You don't need to be flexible to start Pilates.

In fact, many people come to Pilates because they feel stiff, tight or less mobile than they used to.

Pilates can help improve flexibility, mobility, strength and body awareness over time.

The important thing is finding a class that meets you where you are now, not where you think you should be.

Vaginal dryness is incredibly common during and after menopause, but it's still something many women feel uncomfortable talking about.

For some women it causes mild irritation.

For others it can affect exercise, sitting comfortably, intimacy, bladder health and day-to-day quality of life.

The good news is that there are often simple solutions that can help, including vaginal moisturisers, lubricants and, for many women, local oestrogen prescribed by their GP.

If you're also experiencing symptoms such as pelvic heaviness, bladder urgency, discomfort or prolapse symptoms, a Women's Health Physiotherapy assessment can help identify what else may be contributing.

You don't need to simply put up with symptoms because they're common.

Many women expect hot flushes and night sweats during menopause.

What often catches them by surprise are the pelvic health changes.

Symptoms such as:

• Vaginal dryness
• Discomfort during in*******se
• A feeling of heaviness or pressure
• Recurrent urinary infections
• Increased bladder urgency

are all common during perimenopause and postmenopause.

Many women assume these symptoms are simply part of ageing and that nothing can be done.

In reality, there are often treatments and strategies that can help.

As a Women's Health Physiotherapist, I assess and treat pelvic health problems including prolapse symptoms, bladder issues, pelvic pain and postmenopausal pelvic health concerns.

If you're experiencing symptoms that are affecting your confidence or quality of life, support is available.
