This is why our plans are only ever plan B, and the children's interests Plan A

I’ve been delivering Forest School programs for several years now, mostly with school age children ages 5 to 12, and so my methods for planning each session have become somewhat subconscious. It’s become so routine that I didn’t even realize how little I thought about it until I received the f...

We have had such an amazing 4 weeks with these guys. Well done to everyone who has been involved and to all the hard work done behind the scenes to get this project off the ground, and running.

Recent news headlines and comments from ‘leading education experts’ have suggested the school week should be extended by eight hours, and that our children should be given extra schooling during the summer holidays to make up for lessons lost during lockdown. Our children are ‘falling behind’ they say.

Extra time added to the school day is the last thing our children need. Extra schooling in the summer holidays is the last thing our children need. It’s the last thing our teachers and school staff need.

At a time where many of us are worried about our children’s mental health (and the mental health of our teachers), the last thing we should do is take away any free time.

Children need connection, social interaction, friends, fun and time to rebuild family relationships that have been broken during lockdown. Maybe, just maybe (that as parents) we want to actually enjoy summer with our children (and chuck the screens in the bin).

We do not need to sacrifice the mental health and wellbeing of our children, teachers and school staff for the sake of government (academic) agenda.

Are our children really falling behind? Falling behind what? Outdated and unrealistic government expectations?

This year’s summer holiday is needed more than ever. Let the children play. Let school staff rest.

It has been sad not to have any visitors to the woods for so long. For a while even I wasn’t able to go there.

It had been a long wet winter, we had watched as the snowdrop and celandine first showed their faces. The spring sunshine had just begun to warm the ground, the birds were singing and you could almost hear the sycamore leaves bursting open. Then we had to leave.

While we were away the magic of the wood took over, brambles and ivy grew quickly to cover the paths and when I returned foxgloves were taller than me. The wood felt at peace with itself, patiently waiting for our return

This is why Forest School is so beneficial - the children may appear to be aimlessly playing, but actually they are taking part in accelerated learning.

"Scientists have recently determined that it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain - unless it is done with play, in which case, it takes between 10-20 repetitions."
