What is Judo and why will it be good for my child?

Judo is a martial art and Olympic sport, which (amongst many other things) is great for developing:

*Co-ordination- Most judo techniques require you to do several different things at once and to do so quickly and precisely. A great foundation for any sport and for life.

*Self defence- Judo techniques are taught to police forces all over the world for a reason. This is because judo is probably the most effective martial art for getting opponents to the ground and keeping them there without using unnecessary force.

*Fitness- Judo players are some of the most well rounded athletes in all of sport because of Judo's requirements of speed, strength, explosiveness, endurance, balance, determination and grit. This was perhaps demonstrated best when Judo player Brian Jacks won the BBC sports show Superstars against athletes from many other sports in the process.

*Self reliance- Judo is an individual sport and therefore there are no team mates to hide behind and it's not always easy. In Judo, a players success or failure is completely down to them- As in life, success in Judo comes from hard work, a great lesson for children to learn at an early age.

At Watford Judo we reinforce all of the above via a series of tried and tested games that the children love. Our coach teaches Judo professionally in schools and has developed these games to teach the children the lessons and skills of Judo, whilst making sure that they have a great time in the process.
