For the benefit of my grade 6 dance students & anyone interested in the history of classical Indian dance… part of the Natyaveda.
Natyaveda is regarded as the fifth Veda, created by Bharata Muni under the guidance of Brahma. Natyaveda provides a comprehensive art form that combines drama, dance, music, and expression.
According to the scriptures, Brahma drew elements from the four Vedas—recitation from the Rig Veda, music from the Sama Veda, gestures from the Yajur Veda, and emotions from the Atharva Veda—to create Natyaveda for the benefit and enlightenment of all people. A significant aspect of Natyaveda is the inspiration derived from the divine dance of Shiva, especially the Shiva Tandava, a powerful and dynamic dance symbolizing creation, preservation, and destruction. Shiva's Tandava embodies cosmic energy and serves as the foundation for many classical Indian dance traditions, where rhythm, movement, and expression unite to convey spiritual and philosophical truths.
