Aikido Shinseikai UK

Aikido Shinseikai UK Aikido Shinseikai aims to preserve the spirit and techniques of the aikido as taught by Kanshu Sunadomari.

“This budo is both martial art and a religious faith.” – Morehei Ueshiba (founder of aikido). Whether you are a Christian or are of any other religious denomination, Aikido Shinseikai provides a path that is not in opposition to an individual’s faith or beliefs but rather compliments and even strengthens them. This aikido is the all encompassing belief that the power of love and harmony unites our hearts with the spirit of heaven and earth.

A massive congratulations to Elia van Schaijk for achieving her 1st Kyu and David Dave Eggelton for achieving his 4th Kyu. They have worked incredibly hard over the last year practising aikidoshinseikai and their new grades are so incredibly well deserved.

Hi All,

Just a quick message to let everyone know that I am unable to teach this week due to my little sister and her family visiting. However, if any of you would like to use the mats for solo practice then please let me know and I'll make sure they set up the mats for you.

Aikido will recommence on the 27th after half term.

Many thanks,

John

I am so sorry everyone.
The family and I are moving to the other side of Clanfield from Friday and I need to be free to be involved. Elia was absolutely correct with her prediction about there being no Aikido. After deep thought and realising the immensity of the move, I would be daft in the head to think I could still get away with teaching this Friday. That means our last session will be on the 19th. See you all soon!

Due to unforeseen family circumstances there will be no aikido tonight.

Massive apologies. All aikido credits will roll over.

Regards,

John

It has been over a decade since I last met with this amazing guy. Such a pleasure to catch up and discuss all things aikido and moreover to reminice about the good old days in Japan.
Thanks for a great evening Dennis. Hopefully, we don't let so much time pass before we next meetup.

🌸Aikido Knee Walking🌸

For all of you wanting to understand more about kneeling techniques in our Aikido.

A little background as per Sunadomari Kanshu in his book Aikido no Kokoro, Kokyū-Ryoku!

How to Walk in Suwari-waza (Seated Techniques)

It has long been said that Japanese people of the past had strong legs and hips, but young people today are often said to have weak legs and hips.

This is a good example of how lifestyle itself determines whether the body becomes strong or weak.

In the past, daily life meant constantly standing up and sitting down on tatami mats, and when going out people would walk long distances.

Today, even if there are tatami mats at home, most people sit on chairs.

With the rise of cars and the westernization of life, opportunities to walk have greatly decreased.

Therefore, to strengthen the legs and hips, the traditional Japanese lifestyle of living on tatami is best.

In Aikido, there are seated techniques (suwari-waza), so one naturally strengthens the hips and legs.

It is also an excellent form of solo training.

INSTRUCTIONS
explaining how the knee walking is performed moving forward!

Advancing Forward – Seen from the Front

First, sit in seiza (formal kneeling position).

Cross the left foot over the right, leaving about three fist-widths of space between the knees, and move forward.

At this time, relax your strength and let the movement come from the base of your hips.

The body extends naturally. Place both hands lightly on the thighs.

(Photo 1)

Next, step forward with the right foot and lift the hips slightly.

At this time, ensure that the right foot and right knee are aligned in the same direction.

Move the left knee slightly around and place the right knee down.

(Photo 2)

Repeat this practice.

At first, remain seated and train until you can move quickly.

Once the right leg has moved forward, next move the left leg.

At this time, also be careful not to let the hips rise.

When moving the right knee, rotate lightly so the hips don’t rise, and advance the left knee.

(Photos 3–6)

Repeat this process.

The main point to pay attention to is that movement forward does not come from the legs but from the movement of the hips.

Think of the legs as simply following the hips’ movement.

A little explanation of key words frequently used in our style of aikido. These are definitely worth knowing. For anyone who is unfamiliar with reading Japanese text I have included the phonetic pronunciation of each word!

✨Kokyū-ryoku
Breath-Power / Vital Breath Force.

Yesterday I tried to explain the importance of Kokyū-ryoku at our weekly aikido session. As I drove home I realised that I need to communicate more of these learning points for you to refer back to. So here is a brief summary of Sunadomari sensei's Kokyū-ryoku!

"Kokyū-ryoku is the awakened breath-power of the hara, expressed as whole-body connection and flowing technique."
It is the essence of Sunadomari Sensei’s Aikido and can be considered the 'living energy that transforms form into realization (satoru).'

Sunadomari Sensei taught that“Kokyū-ryoku is the very spirit of waza.” Without it, technique is only empty form.
Kokyū-ryoku isn’t just about breathing, it is power that rises from the hara, settles the mind, and flows through the whole body as connection (musubi). This living force allows us to move our partner without stiffness or struggle.
He explained that true practice isn’t about forcing with strength, or going limp and yielding. Instead, kokyū-ryoku is found in the third state of genuine connection: relaxed yet integrated, where intent and body act as one.
📖 For reference, see 'Enlightenment Through Aikido' (Dennis Clark’s translation of 合気道で悟る) and Sunadomari Sensei’s series, 'Aikidō no Kokoro: Kokyū-Ryoku'.

For anyone looking for a special little place packed with great Japanese food why not Sushiology out in Fratton, Portsmouth!

Here's my review:

First visit this afternoon with my wife and daughter and I have to say we had some of the best Japanese food yet! We thoroughly enjoyed every bite. The donburi, takoyaki and green tea took me right back to eating in my local restaurant back in Kosa in Kumamoto, Japan. If you are looking for something with a little bit of special then this place smashes Wagamamas out of the water. 👍😀🙏
