Wow what a day that was……
The biggest day our club has ever had and they did not disappoint.
After winning four county fours & two regional fours games our lads got to play in the round of 64 at the nationals, and what a start it was! The occasion didn’t have any effect on them, they came out flying taking a 7-0 lead against a four from Cornwall, some great bowls from everyone and our lads ended up winning 21-12 👏👏👏👏
After just a 40 minute rest they were onto there 2nd game of the day playing a team from Sussex, our lads got off to a terrible start finding themselves 12-1 down but did grow into the game it was just too much to ask! They lost 22-15.
A massive well done lads! Absolutely amazing to reached the round of 32!
There are over 2,000 bowls clubs in England and we reached the last 32! A great achievement.

Our little club is not so little anymore!

Purbrook is going to the nationals!!!

The biggest achievement in the clubs history, never been done before but a massive well done to Tony Wall, John Burrowes, Lewis Voysey & Nathan Hanley! Everyone at the club is extremely proud and will be cheering you on!

Purbrook's League team found itself with three No. 3s missing for the visit of Cosham on Friday evening.
After end 6 Purbrook were 31-12 up winning on three rinks.
After end 12 Purbrook found themselves in the comfortable position with a 53-28 lead.
Mark Berry had a comfortable 26-11 win, Dave Jelley covered Tony Wall's 8-21 defeat with a 21-8 win and Mick Frank came out 15-13 winners after Cosham came back to level the game on the 17th end.
The final result was Purbrook 70 Cosham 53 with Purbrook winning on 3 rinks.

Purbrook were playing away this Evening we went there having lost top spot in the league. So we needed a win to help us hopefully take our top spot back. Once again the team did not let me down and we took 10 of the possible 12 points on offer. Missing 12 points by 3 shots on 1 rink. Well done guys we go marching on.

Combination League

Going into this match Purbrook & Bridgemary having played 2 matches last week, Purbrook are top of the league and Bridgmary a close second

So this match pitted the current top 2 against each other, with Purbrook required to get 10 points from the 12 available to stay top.

Match Report

Rink 2 Lead: Martin Cook (El Prez), No 2: Paul Hale, No3: Paul Knight, Skip: Darren Readman

Bridgemary got off to a good start winning 2 of the first 3 ends to take a 3-2 lead

But that was as good as it got for Bridgemary, from here on in Purbrook dominated

Taking the next 10 ends to lead 24-3 after 13 ends, and a won rink was now almost a certainty

Notable was the 9th end where Purbrook were 3 shots down with Darren moving the jack and Purbrook getting a 6 as a result

Purbrook took the foot of the gas for the last 5 ends with Bridgemary taking four of them

Final score Purbrook 25 – 9 Bridgemary.

Rink 3: Lead: Martin Howard, No2: Clive Ho**er, No 3: Paul Doggett, Skip: Mark Berry

Purbrook got off to a great start taking 4 on the first end and after the first 3 ends took a 5-1 lead

Purbrook then went on to take the next 3 ends for a single shot each, and it was clear that there was a battle of the skips on this rink, with each bowling some great shots to take shot wood. Purbrook leading 8-1 after 6 ends

The next 3 ends saw Bridgemary claim 4 shots to Purbrook’s 2, Score now 10-5 at the halfway point.

Purbrook now accelerated taking all the next 3 ends to go 15-5 up

On end 13 Bridgemary took a 3 but Purbrook replied taking the next 2 end also for a 3 on each, 21-8 after 15 ends

Bridgemary and Purbrook took a shot each on the 16th and 17th ends

On the 18th End it got interesting with Martin Howard bowling a full-length jack,

And after the leads and No2 bowled the jack was move back to close to the ditch, with Purbrook holding 4

Paul D made it 5, and Bridgemary No3 tried and failed to ditch the jack his wood powered into the ditch.

Paul then successfully took the jack into the ditch and Bridgemary No 3 failed to cut down the count

A hotshot was on the cards at this point, but as the skips bowled Mark Berry added to the count, but the Bridgemary skip got a good wood in and Purbrook ended up with 5 on the last end Final Score 27-9 and took top rink.

Purbrook took the first end to lead 1-0 but from there it was most downhill

Losing the next 5 ends, Bridgemary lead 7-1 after 6 ends

Purbrook did take 2 of the next 3 ends so at the halfway point Bridgemary were leading 9-4 and all to play for on the last 9 ends

However Purbrook could not recover against what was probably Bridgemarys top rink team and Bridgemary to 8 of the of the last 9 ends,

Match Report MWT Eastern Div 2 - Purbrook Silver v Hayling Is Yellow at Purbrook 6th May 2025

Hayling Is Yellow won the toss and elected to take the mat

Rink 3

Lead: Paul Doggett – No2: Martin Howard – Skip: Mark Berry

Hayling bowled a long jack (They didn’t mean too!) and our eyes lit up

Purbrook then got off to a flying start, taking 7 from the first 2 ends as Hayling struggled with the long jack as they are a carpet team

So effectively their lead could not reach the jack for most of the match, so Purbrook just bowled long jacks.

End 3-5 went to Hayling as the Hayling skip came in with a crucial last wood to take shot when Purbrook were holding 3 -5 shots

Going into Tea after 9 ends, Purbrook took a 2, 3 & 5 to make the score 17-4 to Purbrook, with a reply of 1 additional shot for Hayling.

After Tea it was much the same as the first 9 ends with Purbrook winning 7 ends with two Fours & two 3s and Hayling restricted to 2 single shots

Purbrook won 38-6 and claimed Top Rink for the match

Rink 4

Lead: Barry Beel – No : 2 Martin Cook – Skip: Paul Knight

This was a very evenly balanced match

Purbrook got off to a great start winning 2 of the first 3 ends even scoring a 5 on the 3rd end to lead 6-1

Then it all changed with Hayling winning 2 of the next 3 ends, Picking up a 6 on the 4th end, to take the score to 7-8 to Hayling

Ends 6-9, saw Hayling start to get a grip of the game, gaining 4 shots to Purbrook’s 1shot

Going into the break Hayling were in control with Purbrook 8 -12 down

Purbrook came out and lost the 10th end by 2 shots 8-14 down now

But there must be something in the Tea!, as Purbrook took 6 on the next end to level the match 14-14

And another on the next end to now lead 15- 14

The next 3 ends saw each side gain 3 shots each to maintain a 1 shot lead after 15 ends.

And in the final 3 ends though Hayling won 2 end to score 2 more shots, Purbrook took a 3 on the 17th end to win the Rink 21-19

So, it was a very evenly contested rink, but the match was notable for 1 controversial event

Paul Knight bowled a perfectly weighted wood that was destined to touch/get very close to the jack for shot,

Only for a Hayling play to rush out stop the wood and pick it up, believing it had been bowled from an adjacent rink,

The outcome was that Paul bowled his wood again, due to the not knowing what the rule is for this infringement – rule check required

Rink 5

Lead: Brian Chalmers - No 2: Simon Calverley - Skip: Mike Frank

To be honest this was a struggle for Purbrook with 3 in form Hayling bowlers,

Purbrook took 2 of the first 3 ends to lead 2-1

But from here Hayling took the next 6 ends to go into the break 15-2 up, the writing was on the wall!

Purbrook came out of tea more focused and took 4 shots to Hayling’s 1 shot during the next 3 ends, score 16-6 to Hayling

End 13-15 saw each side gain 2 shots apiece score 18-8 to Hayling and Purbrook 10 shots adrift

Ends 16-18 was the most productive for Purbrook scoring 6 shots to Hayling’s 1 shot

Final Score Purbrook 14 -19 Hayling island,

So, for Purbrook to come back to keep the shot difference to Just 5 was a great effort when 13 shots adrift at half time,

it was truly a match of 2 halves, with Hayling taking the first 9 ends 15-2, but Purbrook taking the last 9 ends 12-4, a good fight back team 😊

Ladies & Gentlemen

The first P&D league Div 2 match took place this evening, on what was another glorious evening of summer like weather.
The P&D league matches pit the best bowlers from each club against each other and clubs can only enter a single team into the league.
I want to thank those that came along to support the team tonight, especially Darren Readman who stood in minutes before the start for an absent selected team member.
(This is why It’s important to come along support and be social – you never know, you could be playing not supporting)
The original team selections by Tony Wall went out the window as the last 2 weeks progressed, but thankfully Purbrook had a full team for the match.
So again, thank you to all those that stood in to play in tonight’s match.

Match Report

Rink 2 – Jez Webb – Brian Chalmers- Paul Doggett- Paul Tappenden (Skip)
Purbrook got off to a poor start, going 6-0 down after the first 4 ends,
Denmead seemed well in control delivering very accurate woods to the jack
But Purbrook now started to find the line and won the next 3 ends, score 5-6 to Denmead after 7 ends
By the 11th end it was 8 -8 and Purbrook were now more consistent in their bowling
With Denmead skip Richard Allen delivering some crucial bowls to cut down the woods Purbrook were holding
But that was to no avail as from the 11th end Purbrook took firm control winning 7 of the last 8 ends, with all 4 team members coming in with some great shots.
Denmead’s morale was broken and Purbrook ran out winners on rink 2, 22-9 the final score.
Many thanks to Jez Webb, a last-minute stand in, who had not previously bowled lead, but grew ever more confident of delivering the jack to the feet of the skipper Paul Tappenden

Rink 3 – John Gosling – Harry Webb – Simon Calverley – Mike Frank (Skip)
This was Johns first League match – Novice Singles winner last summer, this was a baptism into league matches – Thanks for playing tonight at short notice,
This match was a tight affair, With Denmead getting off to a flying start 4-0 up after 2 ends
And 9 -2 up after the first 6 ends
Purbrook fought back and by the 12th end it was 8-10 to Denmead
By the 13th end it was 9-10 to Denmead and Purbrook started to pile on the pressure
But alas this was the last end Purbrook won in this match and Denmead ran out 16-9 winners
2 Rink points for Denmead

Rink 4 – Darren Readman – Peter Nicklen – Martin Howard – David Jelley
What a 2 weeks for Darren Readman just coming back from major surgery, he still managed to Skip the combination team on Monday V Gosport to take a max points win, Darren then stood down Wednesday for yours Truly to captain the team against Portsmouth Water, as Darren was suffering some Post Op issues Purbrook again won the match for a second Combination win, Tonight Darren came down to support the league team this evening, it soon became evident Purbrook were a player short and Darren raced home , and got his kit on to be back in time for Purbrook to field a full squad of players. Thank Daz, though got to say it was a bit of a change for him to take on the lead role instead of Skip but in his own words “ I was right on it tonight” , Daz I think you found you vocation hehe!
Purbrook went into an immediate lead and won 5 of the first 6 ends, 9-2 Purbrook and well in control after the first 1/3 of the match, picking up two 3’s
The next 6 ends saw Purbrook and Denmead win 3 ends apiece but Purbrook had the greater shot difference for these 6 ends– Score now 16 -6 to Purbrook,
Purbrook Dominating,
The last 6 ends saw Denmead fight back, with them winning 4 of the last 6 ends , but it was not enough and Purbrook took the rink win, winning 19-12

Rink 5 – John Burrowes – Richard Murray – Jack Webb - Mark Berry
Thanks to Richard Murray for standing in to play today at short Notice, the team got shuffled a bit and Mark Berry was promoted to Skip tonight at short notice as the normal skip was not available.
The rule book needs to be checked regarding league and combination skips, (League skips may not Skip combination sides after skipping x amount of league games dependent on league team size.)
So, after 6 ends it was 3 ends each, with Denmead having the better of it leading 6-4
But the next 6 ends saw Purbrook turn the match on its head winning 5 of the next 6 ends and having two 4’s Purbrook now leading 15-7
The last 6 ends sae Purbrook and Denmead win 3 ends each , but Purbrook gained the most shots, Winning the match 20-10

The midweek triples got underway this afternoon with Purbrook Silvers first match away to Waterlooville Blue at Jubilee Park, Waterlooville play on carpet, and it is always a difficult place to even win a rink, The aim was to win at least 1 rink to prevent them getting a maximum points total, so it is no surprise Waterlooville came out victorious ☹
The Sun was beating down on us and it was very hot on the green.
Waterlooville lost the coin toss, and I gave them the mat to bowl first.

On Rink 2 , Paul Doggett, Martin Howard and skip Mark Berry got off to a flying start winning 3 shots on the first end, from that point on Purbrook were always in control and restricting Waterlooville Blue to winning just 4 /18 ends, Purbrook winning 27-8 and getting that valuable rink win for 2 precious Points.

On Rink 4, Brian Chalmers, Clive Thomas and skip Simon Calverley had a torrid afternoon, it took to the 16th end for them to break their duck and they lost the match 53-1,
We will take that on the chin and move on.
