How do we teach water safety to toddlers and pre-school children?

We start be teaching them not to go into the water without an adult and waiting for permission…and then what to do if they accidentally fall in.

80% of accidental drownings in children under 17 years old happen when they are unsupervised.

48 % of accidental drownings happed in July and August in 2025 (WAID 2025)

Warm weather. Cold water. Real danger.

If you fall in or get into trouble, stay calm.

Make sure your group knows what to do. It could save a life. Start by taking 5 minutes to learn the water safety code:

DROWING PREVENTION WEEK 2026
The Doubling (Worrying)Trend:
We all need to double down!

Child drowning deaths in England have doubled compared to the period immediately prior to the pandemic (2019) in 0-17 year olds.

Lack of Supervision: A significant majority (over 80%) of child drownings occurred when there was no adult supervision.

This is WHY we teach children to NEVER enter the water without an adult's permission. This is why it is a PARTNERSHIP between the baby / toddler / pre-schooler and their loved one, as they learn together.

Infant Mental Health Week

Do you think infants are too young to suffer from poor mental health? Think again....

Touch is the foundational language of infant mental health. Without consistent, nurturing physical contact, infants face severe developmental stressors, including elevated stress hormones, delayed socio-emotional processing, and an impaired ability to form secure attachments.

The water amplifies the sensation of touch an infant experiences from their caregiver, supercharging the benefits. Combined with 1:1 attention the pool is a powerful place to nurture the bond between them.... the gaze between this Mum and her baby says it all 😍

Care + Consistency + Continuity = CONFIDENCE!

Sharon Buck explains how we develop water confidence with our swimmers. The earlier you start your child's swimming journey the better. Helping children to experience and develop a lifelong affinity with the water is our manttra. You never to young or old to enjoy water based activities at Aqua Affinity

Let us introduce you to Sharon Buck - the 'other' instructor of our Baby and Pre-school swimming sessions. Sharons daughters started with Eleanor Jones and Swim Academy for Babies. Eleanor spotted that Sharon had all the qualities to be a natural at her role and the rest is history. Our families LOVE Sharon ... as do we here at Aqua Affinity

How do you communicate with your baby or small toddler in the water when they cannot verbalise their needs? They communicate via body language, facial expressions, breathing patterns, movement quality, gaze, and vocalisations.

Let’s wait, watch and wonder. 👀
Wait: Pause so that your baby or toddler can process the activity.
Watch: How are they interacting with the activity?
Wonder: Are they ready for more, or do they need a little break?

Our parent message :

Stiff= Cuddle & Reassure
Soft= I’m ready to explore!

When we read their cues we are seeing them and their needs, not our assumptions.
Your baby will love to see your face, to read your eyes. 🥰😍

With zero distractions in the water it allows for 100% attention and maximum opportunity for parents to bond in those magical moments with their child.
