When “close enough” isn’t good enough.

The stock cockpit on the Canyon Speedmax offers a good range of adjustment, but for some riders the ideal position sits just outside those limits.

For this client, we first established the optimum position through our Clinical BikeFit™ process, ensuring comfort, aerodynamics and sustainable power output were all balanced correctly. Once we were confident we had identified the right coordinates, we worked with Aero Gains to specify a bespoke 3D-printed cockpit designed specifically around those measurements.

The result is a cleaner setup, improved ergonomics, and a position that is no longer constrained by the limitations of off-the-shelf components.

This approach also removes much of the guesswork from the process. Rather than investing in a custom cockpit and hoping it works, we define the position first and then build the equipment around the rider.

A perfect example of technology being used to support good bike fitting—not replace it.

A decade of evolution in a single photo.

At the front is frame #9 from the early days of Bastion Cycles — a bike we had built for a test for CYCLIST magazine over 10 years ago.

Behind it sits a prototype from the new ARCHETYPE platform, equipped with a SRAM RED 1x drivetrain and Partington wheels.

While the technology has moved on considerably, there’s an interesting thread connecting both bikes. Each was designed following an extensive fitting process with Velo Atelier, ensuring the bike was built around the rider rather than forcing the rider to adapt to the bike.

Over the last decade we’ve seen huge advances in aerodynamics, tyre technology, carbon construction, integration and drivetrain design. Perhaps the biggest change, however, has been our understanding of rider position and how a bicycle should interact with the human body.

The Bastion represented some of the most forward-thinking design of its era. The ARCHETYPE platform builds on another ten years of experience fitting riders, designing bicycles and understanding what truly makes a bike fast, comfortable and enjoyable to ride.

Different generations. Different solutions.

The same principle: fit the rider first, then design the bicycle around them.

In a small attempt to help save waste we are now offering our own Organic Chamois Creme as a refill. Simply bring your old tin back and we will refill it for £5 off the normal price.

Our Chamois creme was created over 10 years ago now, to avoid having to use mass produced products that are filled with parabens.

We spent 2 years getting the formula right using only organics ingredients and it has been tested to the highest cosmetics standard.

It provides all day protection from the bacteria that can propagate in the foam of your shorts and create classic saddle sores or infected pores.

Lee recently had the opportunity to travel to Switzerland to take part in his first meeting as a member of the UCI Equipment and New Technology Commission.

It was a genuinely significant moment—not just personally, but for the discipline of bike fitting as a whole. For the first time, a practitioner whose primary focus is the interface between rider and machine is part of these conversations at the highest level of the sport.

The Commission itself is deliberately small. Being entrusted with one of those positions carries a clear responsibility: to contribute thoughtfully, objectively, and in the best interests of cycling as a whole.

What stood out most during this meeting was the depth and seriousness with which equipment innovation is being considered. Decisions made in this environment shape not only elite competition, but also influence the direction of technology across the wider industry.

Lee's role is to ensure that the rider remains central to those discussions. Performance, safety, and fairness are all ultimately experienced through the human body, and it’s vital that this perspective is properly represented.

He is grateful for the opportunity to contribute, and looks forward to supporting the ongoing work of the Commission in a way that reflects both the responsibility of the role and the importance of the decisions being made.

If you’re pressfit bottom bracket shell isn’t the correct size your bearings will wear out more quickly and you’ll be losing power to drive Train resistance
If you keep going through bottom bracket bearings, why not bring your frame in so we can check the tolerance and rectify it with our reaming and facing tools if required, to stop your bearings robbing you of watts

This week we had the pleasure of building up one of the new Bastion archetype frame sets with the superb Campagnolo super record 1x13 groupset.
this bike is now heading down to James from Cyclist Magazine to do a test.
it’s hard to believe that it was over 10 years ago that we sent the first Bastion to cyclist Magazine for test and that frame still looks good today which just goes to show these are an investment.
