Warwick Boat Club

Warwick Boat Club Formed in 1861, Warwick Boat Club encompasses Tennis, Squash, Rowing and Bowls. The Squash section was formed in 1968 and now has 150 members.

The whole club is owned and run by its members and is therefore united by a special team spirit. It is not uncommon, for example to see squash players take on rowers at bowls, or to see tennis and squash players take on each other at rowing during the club's Annual Regatta. The Rowing section, which was the first sport at the club has around 150 members from juniors to veterans. Crews from Warwick

have represented the town at all levels of competition form local regattas through to Henley Royal Regatta and even World Championships. Back on land, the club boasts 11 artificial grass courts tennis courts with 7 of these being floodlit. The section holds a wide variety of tournaments, socials and coaching courses throughout the year. The main focus of the section revolves around a monthly league, catering for all standards. Several teams from Warwick Boat Club also compete in Warwickshire leagues. Finally, the bowls section has around 60 members. Within the club, the game has an important social aspect with dinners organised by the club after most matches. Throughout the summer, the club both organises and attends a wide range of fixtures throughout the region.

Winter doesn't deter us here at Warwick Boat Club - even when it's cold and wet outside, we'll still find a way to play the sports we love.

And to prove it, here's the latest edition of All4One, our club newsletter.

Another fabulous finals night for the WBC squash section - and this time with a very special guest.

The Spring Competition came to a close last night with some fabulous squash, great food and some meaningful presentations.

Gary Murphy took the top spot as champion of the world (well, the squash court) as he beat Graeme to win the Squash Open cup.

James Alty won the Open Plate and Jack stood in for Tom in the Squash Handicap Plate playing captain, Paul, in a great final.

The doubles had everyone's teeth on edge as let after let after let was called. No injuries sustained, miraculously!

Mark Weller took about a million victories, including the Racketball Handicap, the Racketball Open Plate and the Squash Handicap, and had a presence in just about every single category, proving that he'll never be a candidate for the Colin Cup. So there!

And we had a wonderful special guest to present the Colin Cup for the second time - Colin's wife, Yvonne accompanied by daughter Vicky. This year, Mike H took this coveted trophy, a cup that's presented to the unsung hero of the squash section. This is a trophy dedicated to attitude over aptitude. In short, it's for someone who doesn't win much else ๐Ÿ˜†

But this year, it was all about thanking Mike for his hard work and dedication, for making sure everything works (and gets fixed when it breaks) and for being the person we all call on when things go wrong. Thank you Mike!

โค๏ธAnd thank you all squash people for another wonderful evening filled with so much fun and laughter โค๏ธ

The annual Elves v Die Hard competition took place on Monday 15th with the usual good nature and humour, only tempered by an occasionally angry - and often vocal - determination to beat the other side.

Our juniors came into their own. Tommy J, Thomas D, Krish L and Max P all played their hearts out with Thomas and Max beating their adult opponents!

In the end, the Elves did the job but it was neck and neck until the 6th game, with the Die Hard team sadly sliding away to a nail biting finish. (Well done Gary, for coming back to beat Paul 3-2 - but it just wasnโ€™t enough โ˜น๏ธ)

What was more important was that it was another brilliant evening of squash, fun, drinks and laughter, proving once again that the squash section at Warwick Boat Club is the best in the district, the county - and probably the world ๐Ÿ˜€

Whoever says squash isn't for everyone, hasn't taken part in the Autumn Competition at Warwick Boat Club ๐Ÿคฃ

And this year, the difference in squash levels made Competition Organiser, Gary's job even harder. With wild handicaps like -7/+7, the games were more thrilling than ever.

The semi-finals took place last Thursday with the final four teams - Summersgill, Holt, Tsang and Weller - battling it out for a place in the final.

Kathy played fabulously against Eric (+4/-5) to take one game, and get to 14 in the other two. Tony and Lucy, and Paul D and Rob were all well-matched and the final game between Andy L and Gary was excellent - with Gary taking 2/3 but with just a few points in it.

In League 2, Bill and Mike were the racketballers, Polly scored straight sets against Amanda, Mark W took two games from Krish, and Paul J (with a handicap of -7/+7) beat Mark (playing his second match of the evening) 2-1.

In the end it was a tie for Teams Holt and Tsang - 163 points apiece.

On Saturday, the finals saw a surprise triumph for Tommy Jennings, roundly beating Rob H - and finally a 0/0 handicap!

Graeme displayed his usual 'cool as a cucumber' persona as he took all three games from Richard at racketball. Gary went into warp mode against poor Krish - who did amazingly well (+5/-5) to get to 12, 11, 11.

And finally, the Captain of the Winning Team - our very own Polly - beat Eric 15-12, 10-15 and 15-5!

There was nothing left to do apart from eat a delicious dinner (thank you Ewelina!) and watch the presentations. Cunningly, the cups have been dated 2026 so we won't need to get them engraved again next year. Not a mistake, no, Gary - a money-saving exercise ๐Ÿ˜œ

A great competition that once again shows how inclusive WBC squash is. Man, woman, oldie, junior - all are welcome and included.

A huge congratulations to Polly and Team Tsang on their stunning win!

And thank you to Gary for the hard job of organising everyone and deciding on the handicaps. It's very sad that this will be your last competition, and the Committee says thank you โ˜น๏ธ

There was a tiny bit of bickering this year but it all worked out in the end ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

The WBC squash section has had a lot of fun so far in the Autumn Competition.

Last night saw League 2โ€™s Teams Walkey and Alexander get narrowly knocked out, with Summersgill and Weller getting through, following the amazing win in League 1 by Team Tsang (runners up - Team Holt).

Next up - semi finals on the 20th followed by the finals on Saturday 22nd. There will be much eating and drinking and all the presentations as well as a very special thank you to Gary Murphy for all his hard work as Competitions Organiser.

The Autumn competition is a brilliant example of how inclusive this club is. All ages - men, women and juniors - take part and itโ€™s handicapped to make sure itโ€™s fair and everyone gets to enjoy their games.

Sometimes thereโ€™s a tiny bit of bickering about the handicaps ๐Ÿคฃ but it all works out in the end.

A fantastic (if a little chilly) night of Padel last night!

Squash Coach, JP, Ladies Squash Captain, Jess, and Lorna P organised a brilliant ladies Padel tournament between Coventry & N Warks and Warwick Boat Club.

20 players, 2 1/2 hours, timed five minute slots - the pace was fast, furious and a lot of fun. Squash, racketball, tennis and Padel players all mixed in with great humour.

Lots of us have been coached by JP on the Padel courts at both WBC and CNW, and the standard was noticeably improved from previous matches!

We then retired to the clubhouse to eat pizza, drink drinks - and WARM UP!

It was very very close with WBC winning by just two points - 63 to 61. But we've been warned - the return match is going to be fought, and fought hard!

Looking forward to it, ladies ๐Ÿ˜‚
