'After joining the boxing gym, it seemed as if everything in my life revolved around it. If I wasn't fighting at home with my brothers, I was defending myself against the knuckleheads at school. But looking back, I truly believe that boxing is what saved my life. I could have been like anyone else I knew and chose the street life, but that wasn't for me. My goal was to be different from my brothers and make my momma proud. Besides, I was never a follower. The only person I ever wanted to impress was my mother. Although, I loved my brothers, I was no fan of anything they were doing out on the streets. While they were out there committing crimes and beating people up, I chose to train and stay out of trouble. I really wanted to make something of myself instead of becoming just another statistic.'

You're used to making $40,000, maybe $50,000 a year, then all of a sudden you're quit boxing and go into some job that pays $9,000 or something. It's tough. I used to walk around with $100 bills in my pocket, maybe a couple of thousand. Now look what I got... Ten... Twelve... Fifteen dollars.

We couId not go to reIatives for help. More often there were reIatives or friends in our house because they were worse off than we were, and had nowhere to go. For ten years in my house we thought we were feasting when dinner consisted of scrappIe, beans and cabbage, without ham, of course. Sometimes we had potatoes instead of beans or bread; mostIy we had Iess, much Iess. l won't try to detaiI our desperate poverty. The suffering that undernourishment can bring is not a story to be toId pIay by pIay. But l ask the reader to remember that our famiIy had hunger as a constant house guest most of the time. lt is demoraIizing. Poverty was a way of Iife.
