A Final Tribute to Steve Wright – One Last Time at Grappenhall

For more than 20 years, Steve Wright was a much-loved part of Grappenhall Cricket Club and our 1st XI scorer. Week after week, Steve could be found with the 1XI, faithfully recording the action, supporting players and teams, and becoming a familiar and friendly face to generations of members.

On Monday 29th June, Steve will be making one final visit to Grappenhall Cricket Club before his funeral service at Walton Lea Crematorium.

We would love to give him the send-off he deserves.

We are inviting all current and former players, members, volunteers, supporters and friends of the club to join us and form a cricket bat guard of honour as Steve’s hearse arrives at the club and he comes home to Grappenhall one last time.

If you have a bat, please bring it with you. More importantly, just bring yourself and help us show our respect and appreciation for someone who gave so much of his time, friendship and commitment to our club over many years.

Date: Monday 29th June
Time: Please arrive at the club by 1:30pm. Steve will leave Grappenhall Cricket Club for the final time at approximately 1:40pm, so we would ask everyone to be in position beforehand.

Following the service at Walton Lea Crematorium at 2:40pm, family, friends, current and former players, members and supporters are warmly invited back to Grappenhall Cricket Club for Steve’s wake at 3.30pm.

Steve spent so much time at the club and it feels fitting that we come together there to share memories, celebrate his life and raise a glass to a man who meant so much to so many. We hope those who knew Steve will be able to join us as we remember him and give him the send-off he deserves. 💙💛🏏

A rain-affected afternoon saw Grappenhall 3rd XI go down by 35 runs (DLS) away at Bowdon, but there were plenty of positives to take from the game. Bowdon were bowled out for 175 in 37 overs, with Lucas Arrowsmith leading the way with an excellent 4-28 from 9 overs. Lucas also chipped in with two catches, while his dad Ross was safe as ever, taking a couple of good catches of his own.

It was also a great day for the club’s family as Finn and Paul Knight shared a memorable father-and-son debut for the 3s.

A big thank you also goes to Andy Wright for answering a late call-up and doing a great stint behind the stumps (for 20 overs) . The result didn’t go our way, but the effort, attitude and commitment shown by everyone in tricky conditions was class. We go again next week lads. 🏏👏

Another excellent morning for the U9s with a 41-run win away at Alvanley. The team were outstanding in the field, restricting the hosts to a net score of 280, with Oran picking up two wickets including a wicket maiden, while Zach and Arthur also claimed two wickets each. Albert chipped in with a wicket of his own and there was great energy and commitment from everyone throughout the innings.

The batting was just as impressive as they finished on a net score of 321. Arthur produced one of the moments of the match with two sixes and a four in a single over, only for skipper George Selka to match it with a brilliant over of his own on the way to a well-deserved Player of the Match award. Special mentions too for Nick, who hit his first boundary in a match, Frankie, who struck three fours in an over, and Oban, who showed great toughness after taking a painful blow to the hand before carrying on and playing some lovely shots. A fantastic team performance – the hard work in training is really starting to show. 🏏💙💛

A tough result for the U15s away at Chester Boughton Hall, but plenty of positives to take from the game. Batting first, we posted 95-8 with useful contributions from Saatvic Elaprolu (29) and Lewis Wiles (21*).

The lads never stopped competing in the field, with wickets shared between Eli Tully, Ted Hughes and Finn Hill. There was some excellent effort and commitment throughout, and plenty of lessons to take into the next fixture. Keep working hard, lads. 💙💛🏏

A good day for Grappers U13s as they picked up a 32-run win over Barrow. Plenty of contributions across the team, but special mention to the partnership between Will Mead (30*) and George Coyne (22*), whose retired partnership helped set up our total of 130. Safe to say there was one very proud coaching dad watching from the boundary!

The lads then backed it up with a strong bowling performance, with Louis Gerrard leading the way with 2 wickets for just 8 runs. Great effort from everyone, lots of energy in the field and another enjoyable afternoon of cricket. 🏏💙💛

On Saturday, we came together as a club to hold a minute’s silence for Steve Wright - our scorer, our friend, and a huge part of our community for over 20 years.

He was a constant presence, a familiar face at every game, and someone who gave so much of his time and care to the club and everyone around it. His dedication, warmth, and quiet commitment never went unnoticed.

The ground felt different without him this weekend. And it will for a long time to come.

Steve was truly an asset not only to our club but to the wider community, and his loss will be felt by so many.

Rest in peace, Steve. You will be deeply missed 💙🧡
