At 92 years old, Emma Maria Mazzenga holds four world records in sprinting. But what’s even more astonishing? Scientists say her muscle endurance, cardiovascular health, and mitochondria function resemble that of someone decades younger, in some cases, even someone in their 20s.

She didn’t start running seriously until she was 53 – that’s right, in midlife! She trains just a few times a week. And she never spends a full day indoors.

Emma’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to start. Consistency matters. Aging isn’t the enemy, inactivity is.

Researchers are now studying her muscles to understand how she’s defying age expectations. But Emma already knows the secret: “I don’t like just getting by. I need action.”

Sarcopenia – you might have heard of it as the loss of muscle mass and/or strength. It’s been talked about for years, but until last year there wasn’t actually an agreed-upon global conceptual definition of it! That’s why the Global Leadership Initiative in Sarcopenia (GLIS) gathered to develop one as a collaboration of international experts from major societies and organizations on sarcopenia.

So what’s part of their 2024 published definition of sarcopenia?

This consensus notes sarcopenia as a disease of skeletal muscle of both reduced muscle mass and muscle strength, which becomes more prevalent with age, although not determined by age, and can potentially be reversed. It impairs physical performance and limits mobility, increases risk of falls and fractures, along with hospitalizations, and nursing home admissions. It also affects ability to perform daily activities along with quality of life and can lead to mortality.

So think about it for a moment.

Wouldn’t you prefer to PREVENT muscle decline now rather than deal with or fight against it later? And this also relates to your bone health. Muscle and bones are intimately related. We need to stimulate and strengthen both – to ensure we have the quality of life we desire.

Work your muscles. Load your bones. Let’s do this. 💪

Cool little history on a study that changed the perception and possibility of high-intensity strength training for seniors – 90 year olds specifically! The Journal of the American Medical Association published the study results in 1990 shifting the paradigm on how aging and muscle strength as it noted how these nonagenarians were able to grow muscle by nearly the same amount as younger people.

Talk about inspiring. The article here points out, “Even into oldest age, even in dire situations, every person has some power to change how time changes the body. Especially if you have help, and knowledge.”
