Yesterday saw Verdayne win the second match of the season by 5 wickets at the stunning Coldharbour CC ground on Leith Hill. Some great performances on the day, including wickets for Dru Vadgama, Rob Littleton, Mubin Ahmed and Jaspreet Manoor, and a brilliant 94 for Manveer Singh Sokhi (unluckily caught on the boundary going for yet another six).

The club has come a long way since its first ever match, which took place exactly 40 years ago today (2.5.82). On that occasion, we were all out for 32, and lost by 9 wickets.

To celebrate our progress over 40 occasionally glorious years, we went for dinner after our latest victory. Here's to the next 40, and beyond.

The 2022 season begins this Sunday, and stretches all the way to the last Sunday in September. If anyone fancies playing for us this year - matches are predominantly in the Croydon area - let us know. We always need new club members, and with a few injuries and several new babies due over the coming months, we're going to need as many new faces as possible. Get in touch, you'll like us!

It is once again with great sadness that we must announce a devastating loss for the club and for one of its founding families.

Beth Jacques, mother of veteran players David and Steve, passed away on 20 February after a long battle with illness.

Along with her husband, the dearly departed Club President Bob, Mrs Jacques was a constant presence at our matches from day one, making literally hundreds of teas, supporting the team and taking a personal interest in the lives of all of our players.

Here's a small selection from the tributes our players have made to 'a true Verdayne legend':

'She was and always will be an amazing person. We will miss her a lot, but she will always be a part of the club.'

'What a pleasure to be around; always put a smile on our faces.'

'It was always such a pleasure to be in her presence. Having been with the club from a young age, [Bob and Beth] were always a part of the club's identity. She was such a kind-hearted and amazing person.'

'Beth was a lovely lady and her interest in the club and her contributions will always be remembered with great affection and fondness.'

'She was an amazing person. Always made me feel so welcomed. I will miss her deeply.'

'It was always fun to play for Verdayne and, after a good innings, have Bob and Beth come over and be really happy about it. I always felt a sense of achievement to make them happy and enjoy the game so much. It's a blessing to have been able to know them. Verdayne Green will not be the same without them.'

We know there are former players around the world who follow this page and who will be saddened by this news. Feel free to add your own tributes below.

What a fantastic game of cricket! Good to have the team back, looking great in their new kit. Nice little win to start off against our good friends from Beckley. 🏏

Another match day without a match. Very frustrating. However, you can still recreate something of the Verdayne experience by baking some of Sheelagh Crampton's (mother of Richard Alexander Crampton) legendary rock cakes. They're very easy to make, and taste super-excellent. The recipe is worth reading right to the end, for comedy value!

Dress up for the NHS! As the original start of the cricket season is around the corner, we thought we would try something to lighten the mood during these uncertain times. We’re all dressing up in our kit at home and taking a picture, and uploading it to our social media.

We are also donating our match fees to NHS charities. If you want to join in please do! We would love to see some photos!

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Club President Bob Jacques.

As the father of three of our founder members, and a staunch ally and club servant over 39 years, Bob was one of the most important figures in our history.

He was an indefatiguable supporter of the team, and must have spent more time on the boundary at Hamsey Green Playing Field than anyone else.

He will be greatly missed.

Everyone at the club would like to convey their condolences to the entire Jacques family at this difficult time.
