Round or Over?!
Interesting debate about the pros and cons of an Offie bowling round to a RH bat on a turning wicket.
OVER
✅The ball can rag back in sharply
✅The batsman is encouraged to play against the sharp turn and a gate may be opened
✅If the batsman defends to cover the inside edge is in play
❌If the batsman bats on or outside off, LBW and Bowled are nullified
❌The line is quite precise, if it’s too straight and rags it’ll open up the leg side. Too wide and the stumps aren’t in play
❌ Release position is crucial as mentioned below.
AROUND
✅ The target area is in line with the stumps so LBW is in play
✅ The margin for error on line is probably greater as the ball is spinning towards the stumps and not leg side
✅The angle means the batsman views the ball going across them and then back into them, creating rotation.
❌The turn is less pronounced, or more of a straightening so batters defend with a straighter blade.
❌The batsman is less likely to look to play against the spin.
❌For bowlers with variations such as a carrom ball, the ball will pitch outside leg removing LBW
A lot of debate on natural variation. Over the wicket less spin could see a nick but unlikely to see bowled or LBW, around the wicket natural variation could create a nick, LBW or bowled.
Graeme Swann was amazing over the wicket but the beauty was his ability to release from close to the umpires stumps, drift the ball or even just angle it towards slip, open the gate, entice the drive and spin it back sharply. This angle isn’t created or the ball has to be too wide if the release position is mid or wide on the crease with the ball ragging and the beauty of the delivery is can go.
Each individual will have their own opinion and each off spinner will have a preference when the balls turning big.
