Wargrave Bowling Club

Wargrave Bowling Club We are a friendly mixed club, with an excellent green. We play mixed friendlies at the weekend and mid week.

We also have mens
and ladies only league bowls competition matches. We also have a large licensed club house with all facilities.

What a great weekend of finals we have had.
Congratulations to our interclub winners - Martyn Mellor in the Men's Singles, Keith Sykes & Heather Annetts in the Mixed Pairs, Adam Ellis in the 2 Wood and David Askew in the Barry Holder Mixed 2 wood Memorial Cup.

In the Sunday Scratch Mixed Triples, the finalists were Tony Boffin, Phil Linstead and Brian Stain vs Chez Annetts, Heather Annetts and Peter Burton, with the latter team winning by 1 shot on the final end!

It was a fun end to the competitive season!

Our last few matches of this brilliant 2026 season are THIS weekend. Come along on Saturday from 10am to see the finals of our interclub tournament.
On Sunday, we have our scratch mixed triple event from 1.30pm.

What a fabulous day! Thanks to everyone who played or came to watch our Gala Day event.
We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and will come and visit us again.
Congratulations to winners Sue Crowther, David Buckland and Sue Patel of Bassetsbury Manor Bowls Club, and runners up Three Mile Cross Bowling Club.
Thanks to all our helpers, chefs, cake makers, bar staff, sponsors Finli, green keepers, raffle donations and all that made it happen! And thanks to the all the other teams too that made it such a competitive day - Tilehurst, Sunningdale, Reading Bowling Club, Maiden Erlegh Bowling Club, Maidenhead Thicket Bowls Club, Hurst Bowling Club, Twyford Bowling Club.

We made £300 on the raffle for Macmillan Cancer and The Alzheimer's Society and we hoped you enjoyed your Goodie bag including gifts from Thames Wood House Care Home.

Wargrave played away at Twyford Bowling Club today in our second local Derby, the Hedges Cup.
All 4 mixed triples played well but Twyford had their skilled players out.
As the eclipse began over the rinks, giving us a strange light to play in, all were drawing or within 2 shots but in true strange skies tradition, Twyford found some extra mojo to take each rink through to a win - especially on Rink 3, where Phil, Martyn and Norah were winning until the Twyford Skip's last wood!
Despite being a serious game for both clubs, our hosts were friendly and fun to play against, with some jesting rivalry between many of the players.

Final score... 79 - 48

Another friendly evening away today at Reading Bowling Club.
With the early evening temperatures much better than in previous weeks, it made for a perfect summer's bowls match.
Our hosts were friendly and welcoming and lots of laughs and chats could be heard across the 4 rinks as a pairs battle commenced.
The green was like a smooth carpet and it took some of the Wargrave players a few ends to adjust to the fast surface but all agreed it made the game a challenge of skills and experience rather than environment and surface.
On Rink 2, Bryan and Ian started well but lost a few high scoring ends which despite several wins later they couldn't make up.
On Rink 3, Chez and Martyn faced husband and wife duo Captain Graham and Yvonne. Having never played on such a surface, Chez struggled with the speed for the first few ends and the pair gave away 5, but following ends alternated wins of just 1 between the opponents, Wargrave finishing in just a deficit of 3 points.
On Rink 4, Allan paired up with Reading player, Owen as we were a player short. Allan enjoyed the surface and together they won their rink by 1 shot.
On Rink 5, Jim and Captain Norah also enjoyed a good game, winning their game by 2.

The Final score was 57 - 44, but Captain Graham agreed a draw with 2 Rink wins for each team.

Afterwards, we enjoyed perusing the 200 year history boards in their clubhouse and celebrated the close relationship Wargrave players have with Reading. There were the names of many Wargrave players and/or their relatives to be spotted on their honors boards, including Sue Griffin, Darren Holder and Maurice Freeman whose father Bill was President in the 1960s.
