Happy New Year to you all! Hope everyone had a lovely break over the festive period. Now with the start of the new year it's the time a lot of us get motivated and plan what we want to change, achieve or improve this year.

When it comes to getting started we need to think about what it is we want to do and then start looking at the best way we can start taking action towards it. This is where putting together a plan comes in.

Sometimes we make plans harder than they need to be. I have done this too many times to count and end up not doing anything at all and then my motivation drops off quick. Without a plan, we can aimlessly put a lot effort into something and then we can't see any return. This is where using the S.M.A.R.T goal setting structure may help you. This can help us to think about our goals in a more detailed way and help us work out what steps we need to put in place.

S = Specific
Your goals should be specific. What exactly do you want to accomplish? Saying 'I want to lose weight' is not specific. How much weight do you want to lose? How will you do it? For example: I will lose 10lbs by next Christmas by exercising 5x per week and controlling my portion sizes.

M = Measurable
Your goals should be measurable. Knowing how you will track your progress or measure your success will help keep you motivated and know whether what you're doing is working. Weighing yourself, taking pictures, body fat measurements are a few examples.

A = Achievable
Your goals should be achievable. Will you be able to achieve your goal? Is it attainable? Do you have the resources & the time to dedicate to your goals? You don't want to set goals that may look good on paper but are actually very difficult in reality. For example, losing 20lbs in 4 weeks sounds great but in reality it might not be possible for you.

R = Relevant
Your goals should be relevant to you and your interests. You want to lose goals that fit into your lifestyle or contribute towards the bigger picture. For example, losing weight so you can fit into your favourite dress or shirt better.

T = Time Based
Most goals should have a time element but not all the time. Setting a specific date can help keep you focused on accomplishing your goal.

If you feel like you have set goals in the past but havent seemed to quite get there, this can help you to think more about the whole process and journey you have to take in order to accomplish your goals.

I hope 2022 is going to be your year to achieve your goals. If you want any help on your journey then please feel free to drop me a message and I'll help you as much as I can :)

Have you ever started working towards something, been consistent & motivated for a couple of weeks and then things have got in the way and you've lost your momentum?

This can be frustrating and we can end up being very hard on ourselves. Sometimes this can happen as life can throw curve balls, other things take our attention and we fall out of the cycle. I've found this over and over in lots of areas of my life and I can be hard on myself for allowing things to slip or not to be as consistent as I would like to be.

This is when we need to take a step back and see why we have lost that momentum or routine. Once we make sense of that, we then need to see how we can keep ourselves accountable to not let it happen moving forward. This can be done in many ways.

One way is blocking out the time in your calendar so that you don't double book yourself. Another is having someone you're accountable to, either a friend, family member or a coach to make sure you are doing what you say you want to do. Maybe being part of a group who are all working towards the same goal will help with having the support of others experiencing the same things you are.

Whichever way you choose, it comes down to being self disciplined, focused & keeping our eye on our goals/ reasons why. Also try not to be too hard on yourself about it. Things will always come up and get in our way, the real challenge is to not let it throw you off completely that you realise its been 6 months and you havent got back to working towards your goal 😊

Don’t wait. The time will never be just right - Napoleon Hill

This quote is on my wall in front of my desk and it’s there to remind me that there is no such thing as the right time to do what you want to do.

As we are getting closer to the end of the year I can imagine that most of us are thinking that we’ll wait until January to start getting back into our training or onto a new healthier way of eating.

Think about it this way, you can start now and use the remaining 4-5 weeks to build some better habits or improve your schedule to incorporate healthier lifestyle choices and get a jump start on the new year or you can wait till the magic 1st Monday in January to start making changes which may be harder after all the Christmas and New Year indulgences.

The sooner you start, and start with something simple, the easier it will become in the long run! šŸ˜ŠšŸ’ŖšŸ»

Setting realistic expectations

We all want to see results. We all want to see improvements and changes in ourselves but sometimes we set our expectations too high when it comes to our fitness.

We expect to see results after a couple of week of doing something different and then we’re disappointed when we don’t see any changes.

Our bodies are a very complex system that needs more time and exposure to the different thing you’re doing before it starts to change.

Think about when you first learnt to drive. You didn’t pass your test after doing 3 lessons. You did multiple lessons (think I had 20 in the end??) you went out with your parents to practice and eventually you got good enough to pass your test.

Allow yourself more time following the plan and make sure it is a realistic plan you can stick with in order to see the results you want.

Focus on taking small steps everyday instead of the whole journey

Do you feel overwhelmed when you think about what you need to do to achieve a goal or how much you need to do in order to get you closer to it? I know I do and it has hindered me on many occasions. The thought of doing everything and how much time & effort it will take, it almost becomes too daunting to even start.

When we start thinking about the entire plan we need to try and break it down into small steps that we can do on a daily or weekly basis. That way all we can focus on is what we have to do each day rather than everything we need to do over the entire process to achieve our goals.

This will compound over time just by focusing on your tasks for the day, slowly you will make more progress towards your goals than ever before.

Choose what that first step could be and make sure you can stick to it. That first step could be 20 mins of exercise, drink 2l of water, veg with dinner, one less alcoholic drink. Whatever you think it’s suitable, choose it and go for it! šŸ˜ŠšŸ’ŖšŸ»

Failing is part of the journey

It’s one thing no one wants to experience but it’s necessary for progress. I’m always battling my fears of failing and it doesn’t go away magically overnight (much to my wishes šŸ˜‚)

When we start something new or something we want to be able to maintain, this thought can pop into our heads. Can I do this? What happens if I can’t do this? What will people think if I don’t keep this up?

Learning that failing is a part of the process is a tough lesson to embrace. I’m still learning to embrace it everyday as we can’t be expected to get things right all the time or be as consistent as we want to be.

If you think you’re failing at something, try to view it as an opportunity to learn & ask yourself; what might be not working for you right now? Is it realistic what you’re trying to achieve? Are there other factors that are making an impact? Is there a better option for me to try that will still help me make progress?

Once we embrace the fear of failing and start to see it as an opportunity to learn and a part of the journey then it doesn’t seem as scary as we make it out to be in our minds.

Try, fail & learn until you succeed! šŸ’ŖšŸ»šŸ’ŖšŸ»

ā€˜Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can’ - Arthur Ashe

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything on here but I want to get back into the swing of being more consistent on here.

It can be hard to get started with something new or again whether it’s starting exercise, eating better food, building a new daily habit. We can overcomplicate how we start things and I’m one of those people. We can let our own fears, insecurities & worries of what other people may think prevent us from starting.

Sometimes just doing the simplest thing that can move your forwards is the best start. It could be going for a walk, eating a piece of fruit or adding more vegetables to your dinner plate or setting your clothes out the night before for the day.

This is my starting of being more active on here and I will keep this up as best as I can because I want to help you all make small steps forward so you can become a healthier, happier & stronger person.

Power to you!

Finally feeling like I’m starting to get back into a good groove after yesterday’s training session!

It’s taken me a while to get back into training again since the break before Christmas. I restarted the simple strength plan last Monday (18th) after stopping the week before Christmas and with the lockdown announcement on Boxing Day so it’s been about 5 weeks since I’ve done any proper training.

Now I’ve got the routine back in, I’m starting to feel better physically and also mentally which I know has affected me a lot more this time round.

Have you ever ā€˜fallen off the waggon’?

I know I certainly have over the years and I’m pretty sure you have too. This came up in a conversation with a client during a session and it is easy to beat ourselves up when this happens.

The thing is that this is a completely normal part of the journey. We won’t always be on plan 100% of the time and these bumps in the road will come up every now and then.

The best way to get over these is understand why it happened, what you could do to prevent it happening again and to get back to the plan you were on. Try not to change anything otherwise you will stress yourself out more thinking you need to ā€˜make up for your mistake’ by doing more exercise or eating less.

Just keep going with the plan you have in place and it will work itself out in the long term šŸ˜ŠšŸ’ŖšŸ»

We are only a week into the 4 week challenge and I was chatting to one of the participants about how they were getting on with it and if they were finding it beneficial and this is what they responded with!

This was so amazing to receive and it goes to show that simple daily habits along with support and accountability can help you achieve more than just physical results!

There is still 3 weeks left so if you feel like this could be beneficial for you then drop me a message and we can get you started! šŸ˜ŠšŸ’ŖšŸ»

Hey guys, apologies for being a bit MIA from the page, but now getting back into the groove again.

Well, we’re back in lockdown. Not an ideal situation but we will get through this!

With lockdown kicking in, I have been toying with the idea of running a 4 week challenge during this time. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a few weeks now and I think it’s a good time to give it a go.

My aim with this is to offer more support, advice and accountability to help you to start implementing some healthy habits that can improve how you look, move and feel. The challenge will start on Monday 9th Nov and finish on the 4th Dec.

This challenge will be great if you’ve ever felt like you’ve struggled to stick to things in the past or you don’t know how to get started or what you should focus on.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in then please drop a comment below, and I will reach out to you to give you more info.

Have a great day guys and stay positive! We’ve got through this once, we can get through it again! šŸ˜ŠšŸ’ŖšŸ»

Work on changing one thing!

Sounds simple right? I’ve had many chats with clients that want to change everything they currently do to achieve their goals.

What usually happens is that they end up not being able to stick to them as they’ve tried to change too many things at once and become overwhelmed by it as it makes it very difficult to adhere to.

This leads to them feeling frustrated and annoyed that they can’t do it.

Focus on making one change at a time and making sure you can stick to it will help you take one step closer to your goals. Once that’s in place and you can stick to it, you can them move onto the next change & repeat.

If you want any help with this to get you closer to achieving your goals feel free to message me and we can book in a free call to figure this out together for you to start making progress on your journey to a stronger, leaner and healthier you! šŸ˜ŠšŸ’ŖšŸ»
