Smashing Boundaries: SMAFO's Astonishing Debut at WKU World Championships 2023
October marked a momentous month for Sports Martial Arts & Fitness Organisation (SMAFO), representing England at the World Kickboxing and Karate Union (WKU) Championships in Canada 2023.
Our first international outing with WKU, and what a spectacular impression we made! The roar of the crowd, the clash of the fights, the shimmer of medals, and the overwhelming sense of prideβthese are the experiences that will remain etched in our memories forever.
SMAFO, a relatively new participant in the international arena, stunned the global circuit with a resounding victories. Against seasoned contenders and amidst world-class fighters, our team showcased an astounding performance, returning home with an impressive tally of
13 medals

X3 Silvers π₯
X6 Bronze π₯
A triumph that far exceeded our expectations, proving that SMAFO is a force to be reckoned with on the world stage.
This monumental success would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication of our fighters. Their resilience, determination, and spirit in facing some of the most formidable opponents from around the globe were truly awe-inspiring. Their commitment to their craft and the honour of representing their country was palpable in every fight, every punch, every kick.
However, our victory extends beyond the fighters on the matts. The parents and who cheered us on, both at home and in the stands, were invaluable in this journey. Your belief in us fuelled our fighters' resolve and your cheers echoed in our hearts, propelling us towards victory. Michaela Geddes, Louise Castle Tritton Kevin Purdy Cristina Currie Nadine Plunkett
A special shout-out goes to our four unsung heroes, some who made their medic debuts at the Championships, one that does what he always does sits in the coaches chair analysing the fights and providing critical advice to the team. Last but definitely not least fairly new to this team role but taken it with in his stride, Kevin always ensured that fighters was warm stretched and ready for battle.
Their professionalism, calmness under pressure, and dedication to their roles ensured our fighters were in safe hands throughout the event. We salute you!
Lastly, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the WKU team for their warm welcome and exceptional open collaborative attitude to ensure a successful World Championships. The camaraderie we experienced was a testament to the spirit of WKU, transcending boundaries and unifying us all under the banner of martial arts.
As we reflect on our journey at the WKU World Championships, we are filled with pride, gratitude, and anticipation for the future.
