What trainers?

It can be a minefield, so much choice, so many different brands and models, various retailers but which trainers are best for you?

Unfortunately, there is not one simple answer as everybody's needs and requirements, budget, as well as feet are totally different.

If your thing is heavy weight training, then you will need a trainer with a flat, rigid hard sole. This gives you a better connection with the floor, helping to stabilize as you perform your big moves. Examples of these type of trainer are the Nike Metcon, Adidas Dropset and Vivo Barefoot. Some lifters opt for Converse or even no trainers.

If you are after a running trainer then firstly you need to think about what sort of distance and terrain you are going to be doing. If you are an average miles runner then do ensure that you have a well cushioned trainer. If you are longer distance running then a highly cushioned option will be preferred. If you prefer off road running then a trail trainer with a more rugged rubber tread will be best. With a lot of running trainers, it is often better to go up a size to allow for swelling and prevent toes constantly being pressed and potentially having bruised or lost toenails. Good running socks can also be quite thick. All trainers will vary in their sizing and it is a good idea to have your gait analyzed where they will be able to recommend trainers for you. Some examples of good makes are Hoka, Adidas, Brooks, Asics and On.

Whilst a lot of people won’t want to have different trainers for different needs, there are a few that make a good hybrid choice which can be an option for events like HYROX too. Puma, Hoka, Nike and Saucony are favoured a lot and things to look for would be excellent grip, stability and flexibility while being a comfortable running trainer.
